Contrary to popular myth (e.g. "Golf Mk2 8v has more torque than the 16v"), 8v engines rarely deliver more torque than their 16v cousins. But 16v engines often only develop the torque within narrow bands, fairly high up the revs. Dont know the mechanical reason for this, but its true!
I used to think I could stick a 16v engine in my old 1.2 Clio. Just have a careful look at the complexity of it all - diffs, gbox, brakes, suspension, electrics, cooling, starting, charging etc.
If youre going to get a mechanically perfect 172 for silly money and youre going to swap every...

Id be very interested to see if it could be done.
I think the 172 unit costs £950 for the engine? That excludes ancillaries though - box etc. I also heard that the low-pressure 160bhp 2.0 turbo (a la Vel Satis) is fairly cheap. But I wouldnt want to be the first to do it!
The 16v is...
Fine if you can weather the lack of style and if you keep it for a long time - otherwise the depreciation will get you too. Lovely 167bhp motor from the GTi-6 306, but only a 5-speed box instead of that lovely 6-speed unit that the GTi-6/Rallye had.

Im by no means an expert, but I reckon that you might have worn valve guides and that the black smoke is burnt oil.
Am I right in thinking youve done 100k plus? Has the engine ever been fully rebuilt?
I think the 16v/Williams took the 205 GTi concept further. They added a bit of refinement, less snap-tastic handling and more technology - rather than sheer grunt.
I dont think a 16v/Williams is really appreciably quicker in a straight line or in handling terms - they have different power...
The 205 GTi 1.9 is legendary. It was without question the benchmark by which all hot hatches have followed since. The 5 GT Turbo was more tuneable that the Pug, but back in the day it was the 205 that showed the 5 where to go on the twisties.
It took Renault until 1991 with the 16v, then...
;)
Ive gone up against a standard Willy and a standard 16v before now.
The Willy was very impressive - in a kind of "oh no I cant drop a gear, but I havent come on cam yet" kind of way. Like, say, chasing out of a junction at lowish revs in 2nd, where 1st would just cause wheelspin. But...
Someone stole they keys/fobs to my car a while ago - and the spares! I wne to Renault and they wanted £100 for the original fob. As I had an aftermarket Cat 1 system as well, I just got a key blade for £9 from Renault and use my Cat 1 only now. The Cat 1 remote fob only cost £25.
Cheers. Tried sliding it to one side, but it seems stuck! Might spray it with WD40 and leave it overnight. I dont want to bend it as the lock will sit oddly on the door then!
330bhp? Isnt that what the BB show 16v Turbo is running?
Not that it has the capabilities of 4WD or anyhting! Just a headline figure - but I bet its the match of many a Scoob.:D
