sounds like you have a constant 12v on the remote terminal of the amp
that is why it's staying on all the time
there should be a remote cable on the head unit (iirc blue with a white stripe)
red is power
blue should be remote from head unit
and the others are phono leads from headunit to carry audio signal to amp
you are missing a ground.
as for the sub off ebay i'm not even sure if it's worth £50

10 awg is ok for running a seperate supply to a head unit and thats about it
