Err why keep alternators in stock few people ever buy. The fact its so cheap is because they rebuilt them hnce the £20 surcharge.

Gte a new coolent temperature sensor /check the wiring sound like that the issue the engine ECU is taking account of coolent temp by the sounds or the thermostat isn't working.
Most insurance compnays give it free if its for warently work not service work though (might give you an idea what to say its for).
If they do charge its only £10 or so if they want any more get day insurance for the car do a google search there a company does cover for over 21's for that...
