Write it down and take the vehicle to an independant Renault specialist - they will know were to look straight away
If the vehicle doesnt even attempt to turn over it is obviously the starter motor are a bad connection

Very common fault especially at this time of the year when its damp - its usually moisture in the air that causes the fault although i have replaced a few in the summer months. They are individual coil packs - part number 9633001580 £44.72 + vat new.
172 cats differ - a mk2 wont fit a mk1. If you work at the garage why dont you just reverse another car up to the MOT bay and stick the emissions probe in the back box of the other car ???? ;) Other option is fit a new cat
I am J3ned :) - a 1.8 16v lump with box ECU and loom will set you back about £500 for a good one were as the 1.8 8v is a lot more common and a hell of a lot cheaper. Power difference will be greatly improved compared to your 1.4 and from an insurance point of view looking at a 1.8 8v lump will...
You could drop an RSi engine (1.8 8v ) in the car for about £200 - that would the easiest option. Pointless messin with the 1.4 E7J lump - not much you can do with them
It could be something as minor as the seat air bag & the airbag computer + resetting your ECU - £400 - £500 from Renault !!! if its something more serious dont expect change from £1000.
