A friend has asked me to build them a turbo engine for there Nova, I’m going to do it, but If I do, I want to make it powerful and reliable. To do this I have a few questions.
I had a look at two Turbo’d (previously normally aspirated) 1.6 8v Nova’s over the weekend. Neither could run high...
afternoon guys.. wow !, this thread grew !!
ok, lets sorta sum up what we know of the 172 vvt and then look at cams in general.. ps Chavvy, I like yer thinking dood !!
Ok, the cam on the 172, as Ben rightly said, is already a fast road to Rally spec...
Put it in a normal non vvt head...
ak, I wouldnt think you would have done any long term damage at all - or even short term.. this one was obviously abused by its owner but shows what can result.
I wouldnt worry about it at all.. I think if you had run thousands of miles with sh*t petrol, the story may hae been different, but...

good point Tim,
Nick, what suspension and tyres are you running at the mo m8 ?
Heres how I would set mine up for strip runs.
rear suspension... adjustable shcks.. all the way up hard.. springs, normal to 1 " lower.
tyre pressures rear.. about 45 psi..
front.. standard rate springs...
No Nick, you are reading me incorrectly
I am saying quite clearly that you DO not need to do a wheel spinning start to make a good time.. If you can spin the wheels all the way in first, then yes, your suspension and tyre combination is not optimised - in fact, I would go as far as to say...

must disagree Nick m8.
You said you had problem with wheelspin without gas !.. there is NO WAY that you should have any significant spin with such a modest power ouput.
And you say its nothing to do with tyre problems ??.. if your suspension is set up correctly and the tyres are correct...

Superchips certainly are the most knowlegable at the mo..
if the 8000 rev limit is proven on the cup series (which run the same unit as the public cup or 172) then kewl..
there is no reason why the power cannot be increased by 10 - 15 with a properly designed and tested induction, exhaust...
Viceroy, check on the unichip prices.. I dont think it can iclude the dastek at that price m8 !..
heres what ya do..
get them to GUARANTEE the after fitting figure.. take them an RR plot of the car before..
if they dont deliver the goodies and results.. ya get them for free.!
there...
lol
Nick m8, if you have enough power to spin the wheels off gas, then you need better tyres / suspension m8 ...
I aint dissin yer motor dood.. !.. but there is no way you are running the right setup. it should be far quicker than that..
I estimate you are only getting about 40-50 bhp...
