i had this with my magnex too, the middle section developed the 4k rattle  , so stuck it on ebay, only lost 50 notes and i had 6 moths use out of it!!;)
i've got the same car as you and sounds like the same problem too!, i really do beleive its some kind of lambda probe or wiring problem..... i'd deffo change the 1st probe
forget the ecu
so i ttake it your impressed then? i used to have a magnex fitted, whats it sound like compeared (sp) to them?
i think i'm gonna go for a de-cat too!
trust me you really dont need to do all that! i mean leave the second one connected to the plug, but insulation tape it up, then zip tie it to something underneath the car, then you need to plug up the second hole. This WILL work
have faith my friend :)
it will 100% be a faulty lambda probe or wiring to the first sensor (closest the engine) i had the exact same fault, some times fine, sometimes a right pig to drive, the more the pedal squeezed, the more it spluttered etc...... make sure you have the second probe connected, but taped up, now...
the above only applie to the mk2 phase 1 172, if you have a phase 2 (cup shape) my engine banging was sorted by new dog bone mounts from k-tec, and moving the mount on the drivers side wing as far forward as possible
cured.
*just seen you have a mk 2 phase 1*
