yeh. best to put it inside the socket of the joint so it creates a good seal when you put the clamp on, and then smear a load around the joint aswel then clamp it up.

Have you ever drove a 1*2 that's had a fastchip map put on? I've got 1 and the difference is night and day, peak power isn't everything, drivability is.

I had my 182 fastchip mapped and it was the best 100 quid I've spent on the car. I'm sure it has similar effects on a ph1 aswel.

What did the filler cap look like? If it wasn't the butterfly shaped plastic plug then you've done something wrong. The correct oil level is when it is level with the filler hole.
