The front ones are more prone to failing. Yes you can just wipe them off with a cloth. Your better off getting it clip tested, this will show you what fault is stored.
My phase 1 started doing this the other day, I cleaned the crud off the white signal wire to the stater. Bin ok up to now. It could also be the motor getting tight though.
Thats where the fuel preasure regulator would be if it had one. But most ph2s dont have them.
Its pretty normal for them to run lumpy on tickover also.
Yes, remove the plenum, pretty simple job. The gasket is aprox £9 from renault so there is probably the best option. I always remove the rail guard just because i Have hands like spades but you can do it without. After all its only 2 nuts :)
Mate, greg on here has a itb'd 182 which is highly tuned also. Hes from saltash i think and works at mumfords. He comes on here quite abit.

I drop the subby everytime. Like danny says, you get alot more access and it will slide straight out when dropped down abit.
I tend to unblot the rack from the subframe before removing though as so not to drain the PAS fluid.
