A lot of what motoring hacks is b****cks to be honest. And I say that as someone who works in the business. The FK2 Civic Type-R was rubbish compared to the FK8 because it didn't have independent rear suspension, while the Meg RS and Fiesta ST are some of the best hot hatches ever, even though...
Must be VW fanboy in full effect with prices like those being mentioned. As others have said, I simply can't comprehend the fascination with these things, but each to their own I guess. £5k is quite a few hotel stays 😂
Fatty induction kit is one of the best things I ever did to mine. Cheap and cheerful mod that gives the car even more character.
As a couple of others have said, make sure all the suspension is fresh and then go from there. You might decide that it needs nothing or everything!
1.4 powerhouse, 17" wheels to make it even slower, Peco backbox, sub in the boot, Alpine CD player, loved it:

I'd fit Recaros, maybe partially strip the rear, but carpet it and keep it nice. Most people I know that have stripped and caged their road car have regretted it!
I must say, owning a car like these, it would drive me mad not being able to drive it because of bad weather. It's kind of what they were built for lol.
If your head is close enough to the cage when you're strapped into the seat for headbutting the cage to be a risk, I should think your seat needs moving...
Interesting. I wonder if the Gaz top mounts strain the body somehow.
Has @Pauleds strengthened his top mounts? His car has done a few events ok. If his has survived, it might suggest that the Gaz mounts are an issue.
