Cheers all. This isnt looking very hopeful at all. I can see the guy really digging his heels in about this. I suppose I should tell him that if he doesnt get the wheels sorted I will go to trading standards about the cat and exhaust.
He has basically accused me of being the one to knacker...
So, as well as selling me a car with a bodged back box, a completely broken cat and therefore a not entirely legitimate MOT ceftificate, Ive now found out that the locking wheel nut bolts have been screwed in too tight and the nuts damaged so I cannot get the fecking wheels off to change the...
Yes, thats the one. Youre welcome to it. Ill be in Chesterfield (probably for a while) from about 9.15am on Saturday if you want to pop along to the garage to get it.
Yes, it is three months, but Im not getting it sorted under that. Over only had the car for 2 weeks so I expect these things to...
If thats the Renault 4 pin one, then Ive got 2 adapters but no corresponding bolts, if you want them.
Rhys
PS: The guy who sold me the car can sort it out. Starting to get a bit fecked off with the whole thing. The cat was broken, the exhaust has been bodged on and is very noisy and bangs...
Did three runs (all on video pointing at speedo). Got the following times using 2nd & 3rd gears:
4.65, 4.58, 4.84 seconds
Id like to try it when dry as the wheels felt like they were spinning on the damp roads in 2nd gear, but on the whole I reckon thats pretty good.

Adi - does look...

Craig - Ive just come across the same problem today. The adapter that they gave me when I bought the car is bust. How much are you being charged to get the bolts out?
Rhys
Just watch out when it comes to renewal time. Get a new quote from them rather than accepting their renewal price. They tried to get an extra £700 from me.

Ive just been out doing this before seeing this thread. Going to have to pop out again as I had a passenger and only did it in 3rd gear, but it took 6.71 seconds. Did it on video then stopwatched it a few times.

Nah Rich-D, theyve not changed their minds. What happened is that ALL 172s used to be 0-60 in 8.2, then Autocar re-tested and they all received a sudden boost of power. Isnt that right, Tomclio, what with magazine tests ALWAYS being right and a substitute for real life :o;)
Final payment options usually depend on the age of the car, rather than on where you are buying the car from. Most finance companies can do a PCP package. Ring round places where you have seen cups cheaper and ask if they can provide the sort of finance you are looking for.

Rob - I belieive the point is being argued because:
a) this is a discussion forum and
b) there is a point to be argued. We have an ex-106 GTi owner who says it IS possible and that he has done it himself.
Surely it is fairly easy to work out how accurate a speedo is. Find out the mph/1000rpm for each gear and then put it to the test. If in 4th gear at 7000rpm @ 16mph/1000rpm your speedo shows 112mph, then it is accurate. If it show 150mph, it isnt!
Rhys
As if 140mph is any use to anyone with a hot hatch anyway. People didnt think that the Williams could keep up with a 172....we proved it could up to 130mph (where we stopped). People reckon a VTS cant keep up with a Williams.....ummm.....proved that they can just the other night. So, if a Willy...
Rob - 2 seconds slower than what to 60mph? The 106 GTI and VTS reach 60mph in mid to low 7 seconds. The 172 definitely doesnt get there in low 5s!
Rhys
Maybe its not 172s that are slow, but 106 GTis and Saxo VTS are just much faster than youd like to think.....! Id still rather be in a 172 or a Williams, but it looks like the VTS/106 GTi is a bit of a "performance bargin".....
