1.0 ltr Ford Engine vs Ferrari Enzo

saw that earlier on PH - looks quite good, and I can see a lot of forms of motorsport going this way - will make me miss big noisy engines though :(

200+ brake from a 1.0? Jesus.

Awesome MPG though, although I'm not surprised. Probably still have to pay congestion charge on it though.

I'm really excited by ford at the moment. Some of their engines (on paper at least!) look absolutely staggering!

I love the old F1 engines, Granted, the engines blew up after a race or so but they could hit 1300 to 1500 BHP all from 1.5 ltrs. 50 to 60psi of boost!

Crazy Russ. They mentioned there wasn't "too" much fettling going on to get the power from it.

Will weight ever be reduced much? The new Clio has but with comfort, refinement etc comes weight?

IMO, with todays technology a manufacturer could quite easily make a light car that has plenty of creature comforts, but it is still not finacially viable, as it would stick the price of the car up too much.

It would be good as lighter weight better mpg, less wear on components etc etc, but I think nowadays the accountants rule 75% of new car development, which means the cost vs development vs the fact that 85% of the buying public wouldn't care if their car weighed 1150kg's or 1650kgs would rule over :(

The weight surley has all to do with it though - 1100 to 1300 kg's is going to boot those figures
right in the bean-bag!

Everything innovative comes with a price, and manufacturers will charge a premium initially because it is fashionable at the time. After everyone realises it's not "that" beneficial it becomes cheaper because no-one actually wants it.

You know what, russ hits it on the head. Petrolheads think they are a large group, really we're minuscule.

When was the last time you heard the average punter talk about the weight of a car? Or the balance?

If that was the case no one would buy half the cars out there cause a lot are utter s**t... to us anyway.

The accountant I know drives a Hyundai Trajet. That to me spells out a lot about the people who buy cars.

Doesn't surprise me. Those eco boost motors are really good. A few mates of mine are involved in Formula Ford & they're not massive fans as they reckon they're too easy to drive & a bit boring compared to the old Dura & Zetecs or even the kent motors.

You think most big sports bikes are not far off that figure reliably. Not to mention old turbo era GP cars which were pushing big numbers.

I'd still rather the 'rari :rasp:

Impressive though, whilst I realise the power to capacity (when you start moving up in engine size) isn't that impressive, surely 200bhp from a 1.0 3 cyl is rather impressive indeed. Especially considering it claims to have not had "major" work.

All that effort though, and it probably still sounds like it's got a misfire.

I dont think there are many engines on the market which you couldnt get 200bhp per litre from reliabley enough to do a few laps of the rings when turbocharged TBH mate.

Its great marketing by ford though, really pleased to see they have done it :)

I want one as a summer daily.

How much is a new Formula Ford anyway? If they slapped a few £k on the price and sold them with plates I bet they'd sell.

200bhp and 500kg, that'll be quick then.

Look at how it would be when you double it's stats. 400bhp from a 2.0 6cyl. 1.8 20vt's are reaching
350 regularly and being reliable road engines.

Yeah but for advertisement you can't really blame them. Most people won't read into it! 1ltr faster than Enzo. Shweet.

Indeed, they will miss the point that once a non "tweaked" one of these engines gets put into a ford focus, it will be back to being a nearly 10 minutes a lap car like a 1.6 one is in the first place.

I think people are missing the point. I don't think Ford are claiming to have broken any moulds or records. They're certainly not claiming to be pioneers of the 200bhp/L club.

Ford have shown us that a 1.0 3 cylinder car that is reliable and a good engine (from what i've read) in an everyday family car, is also versatile enough for a racing car.

IMO of course.

Chassis is 33k new & an engine is just over 8.5k. Pick up a second hand set up cheaper.

It certainly seems a better way to go than Electric. For the immediate future anyway.

Nuclear generated electricity is the future of transport but we need better battery technology first, MUCH better in fact.

That's why I can't understand why Renault have done what they've done and sacked off a load of their range in favour of all electric.

IMO, the public aren't ready for it, have no confidence in it and have nowhere near enough knowledge of it to be able to go out and buy one.

I really wish i'd have paid attention at school because i'd love to be involved with all this sort of stuff as a job. I love it.

Heard roumers that Ford WONT be putting it in the Fiesta, which seems like madness to me. 145bhp with a Superchip in a Fiesta would be a fantastic car!

From what Ive seen there are very few jobs in car design that arent mega boring.

Ive got a mate who is an aerodynamics modeller for Red Bull formula 1 and she is always moaning about how boring her job is, and likewise another mate who was an engineer for Bar Honda, and again he left because it bored him so much.

Sadly all the jobs end up so narrow, they end up not very interesting, there are exceptions im sure, but they seem to be few and far between.

That's what I found when I left college, I was going to go to uni and do a automotive design course but after the interview, where they explained how specialised you'd get in the third year, and if you managed to get a good job, that's all you'd do, I decided to do regular design with a view of going and doing the automotive degree later in life I hated what I was doing.

One guy I was speaking to a few years ago had basically done nothing but door handles for about the last 6 months, he had the sort of dispear and lack of hope in his eyes normally found in a rape victim.

Depends what floats your boat really. People who don't like GD&T or FEA shouldn't go into car/component design. To some it's boring to others it's a very enjoyable process when you arrive at the right solution. You just have to be the right person for the job. I would suggest your mates were not cut out for that particular job and might have found satisfaction in another sector of the business?

ooo, I hope so too. I know it was confirmed for the US market but that sounds promising. Apparently the new Fiesta will only be a five door in the US which I thought was strange too.

You'd have thought with the size of the yanks, having two big doors would be preferential, even if you could only get (very young) children in the back.
