1.2 16v help needed coil pack

  clio 172 sport
hi ppl just a quick one a mate of mine has just rang who has recently bought a clio 1.2 16v 2001.
he test drove the car and all seemed well so he bought the car.
one week on and the car started driving really crap almost like it was only firing on 3 cylinders (40 mph max on mway).
he took the car to a renault specialist who hooked it up to the diagnostics machine and it came back with the coil pack.
so he replaced the ignition coil pack including leads and new spark plugs and the problem seemed to have been sorted.
another week on he was on a trip to cornwall and broke down on route 150 miles from home.
the aa came to tow him home and when they plugged it into the diagnostics it came up with coil pack again.
he has been scratching his head wondering what it could be so i told him i would ask you trusty knowledgable ppl ;).
any help would be grately appreciated.

how many coils were changed the first time?

They are prone to failure and some have been found to be faulty , even new ones.

hard to tell because replacing the first coilpack cured it so i would try another first clear the ecu of any codes and go from there

exactly.........you could poss have a faulty new one or a failed old pack, only way to be sure is process of elimination

  Not a 320d
See i had the same problem with my first clio, if hed of got some duct tape or insulating tape and taped over the loom which had been rubbed away at by the metal ecu box at the back of the engine............

Open up the bonnet, look for black metal box thing at the back of the engine and see if its loose, and see if its eaten into the loom.

if its a 1.2 16v it wont have 4 pencil type coils, it will have 1 coil pack and leads wont it

read the post above, that is a possibility as once the loom is damaged you will get all kinds of fault codes showing up and it can cause all kinds of problems aswell

the weird thing is it drives funny then you let it cool down couple of hours start it up and it drives fine again seems to be when the temp is hot.:S
