1.2 16v Turbo project

  Clio
Hi, never done a thread like this before so thought id give it a go, rite so as the title ses im.goin to have a go at turbo-ing my ckio 1.2, before any one ses get a 182 / 172 , , i cant, insurance is way to high, and even telling my insurance about aturbo still wont matvh the sport cost, , im only going to have a pop at this to help with my knowledge and because iv never realy have a go with renaults.:D

  Clio
Clio as it is now, needs some work before the turbo project is fully started, for starters a new strut , wheel bearing, splitter, bootlid, and the tracking done, all results of silly speed in the wet

How old are you mate? Assuming you're on your first car?

If it's purely for fun and to build your knowledge base then OK fair enough I could see your point I guess. Only if it's not costing you a bomb like it would if you got someone to do the work for you etc. Otherwise complete waste of money.

But it does seem a little pointless doing it to such an underpowered car. I'm assuming a lot of internals would need replacing to cope with the extra stress. What BHP is a 1.2 Clio? I'd take a guess at 60? If so you might get what, an extra 50? Purely guessing here, sure exerts will give more facts. You still only have a 110 ish BHP car. Which would probably be unreliable.

Also I can't see how the insurance company would let you declare that at such a young age, which again I'm assuming. I would imagine they would bend you over and insert with no lube!

But as I said if the money isn't an issue, you're a mechanic who likes to get involved and you're doing it just for some fun or an experiment then go ahead. Only if you declare it to the insurance though obviously, if you don't, no offence but you're an idiot.

Just my opinion of course. I don't mean to offend if I have. But I wouldn't bother.

I am doing a similar thing, but the major difference is that my Clio is already turbo charged, it's the 1.2 tce, this project will cost you thousands of pounds....

Big brakes circa £800 that's more than a third of your insurance cost for a 182 already I would presume.
Turbo kit circa £2000 at least... I would have thought that would get you a manifold, turbo and some piping, perhaps an oil cooler,
You'll also need it remaping so that's another say £400

So IMO a good budget would be £4000 for what you want. People please correct if I'm wrong so this guy gets good information.

So with £4k ... Say you sell your 1.2 for about 2... Not what you want to hear I know but sometimes you need to listen to others say these things and take it onboard so you have all the information to make your dicissions.... I'm sure you can buy and insure a 182 For £6k... that said it's good to play with engines and cars so if your going to do it, research and try to find specialist to do any work you need.

Power speed in kent. exhausts and custom fabrication specialists,
Hi spec in Kent will make any brakes you want if you have the money,
Ktec bournmouth Renault specialists
Rs tuning Leeds as above,
Deamon tweaks for bits and bobs you may need like samco hoses etc.

If you want to increase your knowledge, then why don't you buy a 600cc bike engine and pop it in the boot... That would be more reliable and possibly be a worthwhile project for you to learn more about oil grease nuts bolts and fire.

All the best.

Yeah my uncles a mechanic so just going to do it for fun, and yeah its second car:), just an experiment , not looking for major gains just that bit extra that i wouldnt get from an airfilter and full system,

  Clio
forgot to add might be changing to another 1.2 , a black 1, and sorning this one for the time being, while the experiment goes through, pr falls through and it all comes off again, but thats just the fun ;)

RTA in waiting..... Mrs ash- clio to A&E room4 please......

If your looking for more power and a project to do with a family member, on the cheap this isn't a worth while project IMO...

No really mate as a biker and with a sister who is an a&e sister, I hear and see a lot of real bad stuff. If the guy can't drive safely in the wet with 60 or so bhp... Doesn't need a lot of boost to surprise you... And it's not just him on the road....

And by real bad stuff I mean holding a young girl of 18 head together while being bagged, bubbles blowing through the skull and my sisters hands as her skull has exploded, people Limbs un recognisable to me and I'm a fitness consultant by trade! Etc etc...

If you were a mechanic yourself and had lots of parts laying around and thought well for a giggle I'll turbo the old 1.2 in the corner that hasn't run for a year... I'd understand and maybe it would be fun to do, but for a young drive who can't control a car in the wet for whatever reason, with say 60bhp, and is complaining about costs of insurance and tax already... would it be fair to suggest this isn't going to be a finished project....

Maybe I have assumed to much, and best of luck to him all the same. :)

What difference does it make that you are a biker? We dont no how he crashed his car ect, and most likely after that he will prob be alot more careful

It's not just the blower they need to know about, its the management remap, brakes, brake lines, intercooler, oil cooler, air filter.... All the non oe stuff.

This is just way over the top all because some lad wants to have a crack at messing with his car? And you dont really make any sense- I just hope you haven't seen all the other threads people are running over 2-300 bhp now that must mean they will all end up in A&E

  Clio tce
He admitted silly speed in the wet.... if I was doing silly speed in the wet its very probable i wouldn't get home....mwestytce to a&e room4 please oh hold on he has no legs.... That's the difference with being a biker

  Clio
ino all the stuff the is needed not just the turbo, i see that you wer assuming all i think i need is a turbo, which is wrong, and i can afford the tax , its 60 odd pound for six month, just ofrt no point if its not being used, IMO, and just to clear the issue of how i crashed, had to brake hard car skidded and , not saying anyone here wouldnt of but i couldnt keep control fast enough, and no i cant afford insurance on a 182, at like 7500 pound who wouldnt be slightly complaining,

And as I have said best luck to him. If you have 300bhp 1.2clio as a teenager fair play.

Main thin is your ok after the crash. Good luck with the project, keep us updated, :)

What's the first thing your looking to get started with.

And as a biker you don't do anything at all that may endanger yourself? Like traveling up the centre of two lanes of standing or worse moving traffic? Overtaking dangerously because oh I'm a biker I can blame cars for any accident I have even if it is because I'm a moron and doing something ridiculous?

Thought not, obviously the model biker that does everything perfectly and sits in traffic like everyone else.

Give the kid a break.

Oh and before you start "that" one I'm a biker of 6 years myself, I've had two accidents from such experience and only one was caused by a car, not being observant at about 10mph, regardless of how much B000ssst yo! It would have still happened.

Get a grip. :banghead:

EDIT: Also FLOL @ 300BHP 1.2, confirmed you live in the clouds....

Filtering is legal if it is safe to do so, under 20mph and not forcing your way through, I'm sure you know this is a grey part in road traffic law... I don't over take dangerously, And yes I filter a lot, with police bikes behind me doing the same with no problems.

Less about me though more about the project.

The legality of it wasn't what was being questioned, were talking about safety aspects here. And nor am I saying I don't do it, I was simply trying to get a point across.

Agreed, more about the project, will be interesting to see how it pans out at the very least :)

Westytce, with the greatest of respect, you come across as a massive dickhead. The guy wants to waste money on devaluing his car, which if I'm not mistaken, is exactly what you're doing to yours, and you lay into him for having a prang by describing a busted open skull that someone had to deal with as a result of an RTA somewhere.

If you're trolling then fair enough. Good work. Otherwise, turn it in FFS.

If it came across as harsh I'm sorry. Honestly for being too blunt... Its different to mine... Mines already a turbo and basically I'm adding a slightly larger one.

More about his project though. And more fluff bunnies :p

God turbo young is a touchy subject, anyway about the project, 1st things get the stuff sorted fro what happened i crash which are listed before tye arguements haha , then, when all is good again, set about what wouod be a good small turbo to use, aranging the manifold to turbo pipe and tubo to manifold pipe, ....THIS IS WHERE I DONT NEED CRITISING AND COULD DO WITH SOME ...HELPFUL...OPINIONS...then will come all the rest, which i have also been critised for not knowing anything about apart from the turbo itself , even though i do and the start clearly says project for fun and helping with my knowledge, but i see with have some experts,

  Clio
Btw on the subject of 2 wheels, i had a moped hahaha:D, not muh at 50cc with few mods, but i got some bike experience also

  Clio tce
Contact andy at power speed ashford, he will make you a manifold with a turbo flange that you want. Look at the diesel turbos as these are quick spool and are designed for lower power, but be careful there are loads to choose from and they are menti to run at lower temps than petrol turbos so an oil cooler will be needed too.

You could use a tce turbo,..

  Clio
Thinking of using a Corsa diesel 1.7 turbo as its small, and mite give him an email, but my uncle can amke manifolds also so il wait and see
