Re: 50% complete 172RWD!

couldnt you just bung a roof scoop and link it to a pip or somehitng, or perhaps a fan seated where the engine is expelling the air though a hole or pipe wherever you can ?

Re: 50% complete 172RWD!

How are you cooling the engine? Could you leave radiators up front and run the coolant pipes along where the exhaust was?

be safer to run the coolant hoses through the car than outside

i agree, my bro`s mate as got a ford ka (i know, shitty ford lol :rasp: ) runnin a forus RS engine up front wiv a huge twin fan rad in the boot (floor cut out) wiv all the water pipes running down past the drivers door + water pump. that will b runnin above 300 horses when finished, p.s he`s done all the work himself!!! excellant work mate, if only more of us ad the bottle (me included :quiet: )

Re: 50% complete 172RWD!

What is the point in all this work?

Changing to rear wheel drive and keeping the original 2.0 litre engine is gaining you zilcho in the performance stakes? Are you still bolting on a blower or two or keeping the engine in the front?

And you loose the rear seats and a hell of a lot of cash in the process? You could have at least shoved a second hand 3.0 engine in there? And then twin turbo'd that!

Better than that you could have had a MK1 V6 for approx £10K now...obvioously not the raod you want to go down though!

Good luck but...

Very confusing...

Re: 50% complete 172RWD!

steve originally built the car for the track iirc. Why not do this? Much more impressive than someone going to a company and getting it done.

Re: 50% complete 172RWD!

I can understand doing it yourself but just not if the performance benefits aren't forthcoming?

You can have a front wheel drive 172 for a track day special just as easily and cheaper....

Hell you can have a brand new RS 197 CUP racer for £20K straight from France ready to go!

I'm thinkin of converting my V6 too. Gonna remove the engine from the rear and stick it in the front and convert to FWD....

Track day special by the same reckoning!

Re: 50% complete 172RWD!

If you think like that then why do anything?

Half the fun is in the process, not the result
Hit the nail on the head! If you read steves earlier posts i think you'll notice it's only cost him around £600 so far.
Another reason for doing it would be the fact it's unique, there are lots of people doing twin engine cars these days, but for what reason i don't know.....as from what i can gather you can't use 2 engines on the road.

Its not a standard engine its a turbo'd 270bhp F4R. Sticking it in the back with RWD gives a big performance increase, you get much more traction.

Clio V6 with 250bhp and 1400kg or converted RWD172 turbo with 270bhp and 1000kg. Decisions decisions.......

Re: 50% complete 172RWD!

How much do you think a rear engine conversion costs, both doing it yourself and getting it done elsewhere, based on the amount of hours, work and parts involved stevo? I remember the days when a mk3 escort could be converted to rwd for about £1k but a rear mounted engine is more extensive so I image much more expensive to do.

Some people don't understand why anyone would do a job like this but I think what you are doing is commendable; you are creating a car that is unique to you, the hard work and skinned knuckles (you will have no doubt experienced) will make it even more personal and regardless of how it goes (I can assume from what you've written about the spec it will be quick) nothing will beat that feeling of accomplishment.

Personally I've always wanted a clio v6 and even considered buying a cat B (parts legally usable) rolled vee and converting my rsi to rear drive using the engine + cradle etc; basically chopping everything worth saving out and transplanting it into my car and strengthen the shell, if it could be done cheaper than buying a real one.
This idea might sound daft but I couldn't give a damn, it would be kept for a good number of years (or untill it falls to bits :) ) and stored during the time I don't use it.

if i could start again now and buy a 172 ,tubocharge it and make it rwd it would only cost £12000?or less!

Can't wait to see the end result of this, fair play for doing it & daring to be different.
