16v engine prob

Just picked up a clio 16v with a problem,turn the key it turns over but wont catch,floor the throttle and it will but you have to keep the pedal planted to get it to just tick over so its undrivable,anyone any ideas where to start,cheers

Check the lambda sensor, also to elliminate things, make sure air getting in and out is not restricted, check the battery+alternator is functioning correctly..
