172 coolant temp prob

  Clio 172
hope someone on here might be able to give me a pointer in the the right direction on this.

Temp gauge sits just above middle of the gauge once warmed up even in traffic, however on the weekend it had been on a motorway run for around 150 miles and then got into city centre and it was all stop/start driving and sitting in traffic. Under hard acceleration the temp gauge shot up as the revs built but no warning lights came on.

Then on Monday again under hard acceleration from some trafficlights, the coolant light and STOP light came on but went out again once i let off.

Coolant level is OK as is the oil, its only done it twice but just wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem.

Any ideas would be greatly recieved.

it's most probable that your coolanttemp.sensor (i believe there's two?) needs replacing. Lot of Clio's suffer from this after a while.
Mind you, i'm no expert but i've been reading around alot on this forum haha

Had a feeling it might be a sensor problem, there seems to be lots of problems people have on here related to them!!

Nice one mate, thanks for the info, as you can see i'm new on here and its real nice to get a response in such a quick time.

time to go sensor searching then!

inspect your radiator

Mine did the same and always has read between the half way mark and mark above that.
I had the temp rise at the weekend and stop sign. Turned out to be a pin prick hole on the side of the rad. It only shot water out when the system was running at 5k revs. So ive changed the rad today and its fixed that for sure!

If this is the same problem that was evident on 182s (even years after they knew about it) then it's not the sensor. It will be the wiring thats connected to it. Usually this fault makes the needle drop though, not rise, so who knows?

Dunno if the two are connected but it seems to be using a lot of fuel as well, although dash still reckons its doing 33mpg.

most of the tank is gone but dash says its done about 155 miles?!:S

Its the coolent temp sensor/wires which are the problem on the 182's

A new sensor and check the wires arn't stretched ect fixes it.
