172 / cup engine - what is in the very top of the engine - help needed

  Clio 172 Cup
Where the air intake meets the engine, there is a flap inside that opens and shuts when revving the engine. Are there anymore of these flaps inside that top part of the engine - underneath where the RenaultSport writing is on the engine?

I'm getting a horrible sounding engine when warm and sat idle. Very rattly. I've flushed and changed the oil and the filter today, and also the spark plugs. It hasnt made a difference. Also had a mechanic check the tappets and they looked ok. The sound seems as though it is coming from inside the part where the Renault Sport writing is - is there anything mechanical inside this part?

can a buggered dephaser pulley(s) and belt cause vibration and rattling inside this part of the engine (under the Renault Sport writing - not where the belts are located near the engine mounting)?

i doubt its inside the inlet manifold(renault sport writing) to be honest, theres nothing mechanical in it. whats your mileage? you belts been done?

ive done 79,000, and i had the cambelt done about 7k ago. I have no idea if they did the pulleys though which is f**king annoying. I want to get the dephaser pulley / belt looked at.

I really think its a mixture of one of the belts and the tappets playing up, but I need a specialist to look at it really.

So theres nothing inside the inlet manifold that can rattle / vibrate?

nothing inside the inlet manifold that can rattle and that 'flap' is the butterfly valve on the throttle body.

Hi, I had the same noise and it sounded coming from the same area. Different people said different things but I went with my gut instinct and got the dephaser done...Cured the problem and the cars silent now!

Don't leave it too long though, Mine started pissing oil onto the pulley and belts days before having it changed and it was the seal around the pulley that was split.

yeah i keep getting advised to change that. Just gonna have to bite the bullet and get it looked at I think. Just didnt think it could be that cos of the area the noise is coming from.

Honestly mate, I was certain it wasn't that cos it was coming from everywhere else but that area. Mines sounded like it was coming from the top aswell near the inlet but it's the vibration that causes it to makes noise elsewhere.

This is very common, there was a thread the other day on it and opinions were firmly split. Some say it's a non issue but worth doing at the same time as the cambelt.

Mine also does this but until it becomes a problem I'm leaving it be. I'll probably get it done on my next cambelt change in 2013 or another 40k.

There's something definitely wrong. Sounds really bad and I want to sell the car. No one will buy it when it sounds like it does at the moment. So gonna have to fork out and get it done.

It sounds bad and will eventually start to piss oil. I feel soooooo much better about my car now it's quiet.

There are 2 noises. Horrid rattle / tapping when the car has warmed up and is sat idling. This noise does go above 2k revs. Then the second noise is a kind of grinding / whooshing sound. It appears when the car is warm and when I pump the accelerator. It comes at 2k revs on accelerating and then again when on de-accelerating. Many people on here say the dephaser pulley.

it will???

erm, can't see how the dephaser being slack would cause an oil leak. that's a complete co-incidence, or the leak has been caused by a badly fitted seal and is related to the depahser failing. If the wrong seal had been fitted then i can easily see this causing both issues

that's dephaser. 100%

sounds like something else too though, idler pulley maybe

Mines was left for close to 45k milesbefore being changed and the dephaser was vibrating against the seal and it eventually ruptured it. Renault specialist who done it said only one other car he has worked on done the same, It too was close to 50k miles of running a failed dephaser and the oil was coming through the seal.
