172 Cup exhaust being a pain!!!!

I put a new back box and centre section on my 172 at the weekend. But i have had a bit of a problem!!!

I cant get the two sections to join completely. As i am sure you know, one sleeve slides over the other, but i cant get them to join up completely and so its not sealing properly. I have tried a big hammer and a bit of wood to protect the exhaust but still no joy.

Any hints or tips would be appreciated.

are they both new OE parts, and can you get them together OK with the exhaust off the car?
