172 Cup or 182 ??

  Titanium 182 FF
I've been driving an Evo 4 for 3 years now and its now getting just too expensive to keep it running. I need something thats cheaper to run but still fun to drive and I've always fancied an RS Clio, but should I go for a 172 Cup or a standard 182?? I'm probably going to trade in teh Evo with a little cash to add to it but still only looking at about £3k, should be plenty for a decent car though.
I can see the positives in both models so just looking for a few opinions and advice really, has anyone owned both? Is there a massive difference in the way they drive?

Thanks in advance, I'm gonna have a flick through some of the guides and stuff on here to get a better idea of the differences.

Hi and welcome to the forum, contact Steve at Rsport cars ltd he is in the traders section on here.

He only deals in mint condition Renaultsports and maybe able to help you out.

Theres a few 182's in dealers nearby at about £3k but they could all be trashed I suppose, I've not been to look at any of them yet. I think I prefer the 172 Cup but theres not too many near to me that haven't got 100k+ on the clock.

I'll have to have a look in the traders section once I sort my memebrship out.

What's wrong with just a PH2 172? Can pick up a decent mileage one for the money you are looking to spend!

they are the same car ! I havent driven both but have been told its the same, cruise control is about the only real difference if it wasnt a cup.

ph2 172 would be ideal :approve: why the cup?

172 Cup for 3k yes-

182 from a dealer - no chance unless lunar mileage

A 182 from me is minimum 4k at the moment

If you want all the toys, climate, cruise control, leather, xenons etc then id say go for a 182. There are deals to be had out there for good condition 182's around the 3k mark.

I dont imagine they drive much, if any different at all. Have a look at the colours on here, seeing some in the flesh may change your mind.

Thanks for the responses and the welcome.

I think I just fancied the 172 cup as I thought it looked better than the ph2 172, easily changed though, maybe a standard 172 with the cup spoiler and alloys would be the ideal option for me, better than a high mileage 182? I'll have a little shop around and see what's available, see what condition the cars are for £3k, and see if I can price up a cup spoiler/alloys.

172 Cup for cheaper servicing costs, cheaper to buy (most of the time), better wheels/spoiler as std.
I'm biased though obviously. I didn't buy a Clio RS for 'toys'.

Downsides are: Naff seats (but you should get Recaros anyway), no ABS - which some insurance companies don't like.

Get a cup and spend some cash uprating it slightly?

I just picked up a 182 with both cup packs for 3.4k from a dealer. Only got a one month warranty with it but it came with 12 months mot, 6 months tax, FSH and belts were done, all be it 20k miles ago. Has 71K on it, but from previously owning the F7R engine I know it doesn't really matter.

Body work is almost mint, with a scuff on one wheel and a few motorway stone chips on the front, interior is immaculate and all electrics are spot on, also has a full ss exhaust system.

Negatives are that it cames with 3 budget tyres one of which had a puncture... nothing too serious though!

I shopped around quite a bit, I saw 4 before purchasing this one because the rest all had issues. If you aim for something that has had it's belts done and FSH mileage is irrelevant, only makes the price cheaper :)

A civilised ph.2 172 isn't a bad compromise. You're hardly going to be carry the same speed in either of them compared to an Evo so arguing over the relative merits of Cup -v- Normal 172 is almost irrelevant. In my mind, anyway,

If it's purely cosmetics, then get the spoiler, splitter and wheels from a Cup on a 172 and you've got it sorted. As a bonus, you get to have climate, cruise, a bit of leather and xenons. Hell, I you can't say that about most Evos eh? ;)

Welcome aboard

you know that the inside of a 172 cup is horrible in my eyes and the cup's sometimes go for more that a normal 172 with all the extras ! :S

Cup's are more likely to have been ragged in my eyes !

Lol not a very insightful post.

The inside looks almost identical apart from seats which when sat in you can't see and a few missing buttons and nobs, hardly an eye sore from a standard 172! Coming from an Evo 4, which isn't exactly a spec'd BMW inside would hardly be any worse! And when he's trying to save money u can't compromise cabin looks!

Why are cups more likely to be 'ragged' because they are more 'driver focused'?

I got my cup with 80k and FSH and it's almost as new apart from a few stone chips at the front, engine pulls fantastic and has always been looked after by specialists. Bit of a wasted comment on an advice thread!

IMO: I wanted to have the refinements with a standard 172 as I actually liked the look of them more than a 182. Then, as said the basic wheels and no spoiler as standard actually put me off abit so I compromised and went for a well looked after cup with some decent mods for the same money as a good condition 172.

About personal preference but don't get sucked in by the toys, I do 400 miles a week on the motorway but don't miss cruise control from my last car!

  Clio 172 cup,
I currently own a 172 cup which is for sale and have had the normal 172 and ph1 as well, all I can say is they are so much better to drive than the normal car, the slight loss of toys is very much worth it, its sharper, more agile and goes a lot better, not to say mine is ragged as some have said above because it is not, it is still under 50k with fsh and running perfectly.

It's all about what you feel is better for yourself, take a test drive in both then make up your mind with the one you decide is better for you!

Dont let miles put you off. My 182 Cup doesnt miss a beat. It wasnt looked after before i got it but ive put the time and effort in ( Money too ) and i f**king love it. Wont be changing for a long time yet.

Go for what best suits you, but dont go see a 172/182 then see a 172cup as you be dissappointed with interior, only thing that put me off.

Good luck...

I've got a van for work and only do about 3k miles a year in my Evo, I only use it for weekend B road driving so cruise and climate control wont be needed.

So maybe a 172 cup and change the seats would be my first choice, failing that a ph2 172 and get the cup spoiler, alloys and splitter. Has anyone got an idea of the prices for decent seats second hand and a set of turinis in good condition, so I can try and get an idea of total prices, cheers.

If it's purely a car to have for a weekend blast then I'd go for the Cup mate. Despite the seats looking a bit naff they're actually suprisingly sturdy and hold you in pretty well.

I'd just go for a 182, having had a cup and now got a 182 to drive about in the 182 is just as good. You get all the spec and in reality the 80kg difference between the Cup and 182 isn't noticeable when driving.

The abs and traction control on the 182 isn't too intrusive over the Cup which has none of these, so your better off having them IMO.

The only good thing about the cup is the mondial blue paint and the turini wheels.

my comments was useful as you can read people agree with me about the cups they just worded it different. The inside is not as nice as a non- cup as said by the other OP's. its not just the seats its the horrible dial heater controls aswell that I dont like. The cloth used on the seats shouldnt have been put on a Renaultsport. It looks like a 1.2.

I dont dis-like the cup I just prefer the non cups and feel that if the op wanted to buy a 1*2 then a non cup maybe better for him.

Track- 172 cup
Road- 1*2
