172 cup to Mk2 v6

  Engles Mummy
Hi All,

Anyone out there who has come from a 172 cup & moved up to a mk2 v6?

If so, would really appreciate it if you could give me your own personal views on the pros & cons (if any) & just general differences in performance between the two.

I'm looking to sell the cup next month & buy a v6 hopefully within the year if I find the right one. Just want to make sure I'm making the right decision, or for the money (15k-18k) I can get something much better overall.

Thanks, Adam

I have just bought an V6 255 and think its great, I love the sound of the V6 and the attention its draws is amazing. People almost fall of in shock.
Still getting used to it as I have only had it 3 days so still being careful, I have never owned a rear wheel drive car and the first day on the way home with it, it pissed down with rain so that was a very slow drive!
I say go for it, the car is superb!
Its happy to be driven like mrs daisy or like the stig and has all the toys to play with.

do it, even if its just for the smile you'll have on your face as you walk upto the car everyday...!

we had a 172 cup before the V6 255 - the cup was great and the Vee was super great - and yes, it is quicker actually, despite what people say

and the smiles never stop - and at the moment petrol is cheaper anyway - unless you just plain can't afford it, and then of course there is no fun.

there are probably "better" cars you can get for £15-18k, but there is no chance of getting something with the exclusivity and "wow" factor of the Vee for that money - in my opinion of course!!!

i loved it, loved every minute of driving it - miss it mightily I have to say, the Trophy just doesn't have the wow :(

I feel the need to highlight this point. Think carefully otherwise you may be forever whinging about how much a Vee costs.

At least allen has explained why you were having issues with the oil gauge fred....

which goes to prove my comment - "until you wrecked it" - there were no issues with the oil gauge when we had it !

Thanks for your replies.

I buy it first and then worry about the fuel, it shouldn't be that much of a problem because during the week I'll only be using to take me to the train station & then back home again. So Saturday/Sundays will be the killers in petrol bills!

I just can’t wait to get it now, the cup has done exceptionally well throughout the 11 months of ownership and It truly is an awesome little car. But I need the WOW factor again and the v6 will give me that & much more.

Only problem now is - What Colour :S ?

Don’t want a blue one has my cup is blue...

It's looking to be silver at the moment, aaaahh that silver is niiice :)

One more problem -

What you CANT do in a v6 -

Donuts
Heavy acceleration from a stand still

Anything else?

Adam

Donuts - Because the drive shaft has a tendancy to pop out (IIRC)

Heavy acceleration - Because the clutch cant take it(IIRC)

f**k it!

If it's still in warranty then you will have a brand new clutch and driveshaft.

You try and get a new clutch under warranty from Renault - you'd have more chance of getting a brand new car with a "sorry about all the bother, sir". (read: no f$%king chance ;) )

Never heard of the driveshaft popping out (not like on a 1*2) - you can't do doughnuts because it doesn't have a limited slip diff. Perhaps if it snows this year you could give it a go. You're right about burn outs, try that more than once a month and you'll inhale more clutch than air.

Btw, I also went from a 182 to a V6 255 - too many differences to put down here, but think of it as much much heavier, a lot more powerful (just enough to counter the extra weight) and more stable car because of it. Then there's the lack of rears seats, the nicer noise, the unique looks.

They're not as expensive to run as people are making out. They're fine on petrol once the engine has warmed up and the tyres last a good 10k (fronts nearer 20k) excluding trackdays.

Do it subway - people will respect your authorita! :rasp:

Ad,

I was going to get a V6 a few months back after the VX, your choosing the right model [Ph2].

I have been and done the lightweight midengined thing [Elise/VX] and wanted to go onto something that is a bit special and rare - the V6 fitted into both of those categories.

Although it isnt that quick, and weighs quite alot - it pushes all the right buttons!

Make sure you buy a Quicksilver OMG exhaust - The V6 sings!

The thing that put me off was the lack of specialists, and servicing/maintenance costs - You have to take the engine out to actually change the bloody timing belt! Doh! Clarkie is the best bet for that ;)

Oh and get onto http://www.v6clio.net for loads of info - they helped me out loads.

Im sure this is exactly what you want in a car... good luck!

PS.... Get a really Leary colour - I saw a lime green one on the M42 the other week.... my neck almost snapped off! :)

It'll be december time when I get it. No doubt they'll be cheaper because of the winter & people wanting money for christmas :)

Looking to spend between 14-18k but hoping to find one with warranty left on it.

They stop making the v6 in 2005 right?

Chris - Silver is what I'm looking for...sooo shiny!

P.S Your exhaust is coming off Monday :)

If you want to abuse the absolute hell out of your V6 then rev the nuts off of it, pop the the clutch and I'm sure it will do a doughnut for you.

Alternatively, buy a cheap 80's rear driver and save yourself 15k.

Youtube has a video of a Clio V6 doing doughnuts and it's not pretty, all huge revs, jittery slides and horrible noises.

Please post a pic of your V6 when you buy it so that I know to steer clear of it at sale time.

Well lucky for me I got the Yozza 24 hours Assistant Card. So when my drive shaft pops out, the Yozza elf’s will come out to play and fix it for me.

well there was 100% nothing wrong with that car when you bought it, apart from the stone chips, and it's apparently had all sorts of problems since you owned it ...... your statement doesn't hold water hon !!! hence I would not like to pay you £17k for the car thanks !!! ;)
