172 Cup Vs. Polo GTi Pics

Omar had a new Polo GTi for a few hours today so we took that and my 172 Cup out for a few tests. A few pics below and more here, detailed shots of the Polo will be added later.

Results are on page 3 of this thread.

and after some initial fears regarding the Cup holder (see below), the Polo GTi got what was probably its first (and only) "cup of tea" test, and yes, you can drive a Polo GTi with a hot cup of tea in the cup holder, although its not exactly recommended...

I like the Polo Gti

I think in 2 door form, in a nice dark grey would look great

How did it go?

Pretty interesting, proof that the stats don't tell the whole story when the car gets moving. No doubting that the Clio is quicker but we had a few interesting results.

Firstly it looks pretty rubbish in the metal (although you can make it look better in pics!), no real meaningful stance to it, looks like a normal Polo. Interior is pretty nice though, better than a Cup (obviously) but not enough quality to put it over and above the regular 172/182.

Accelerating from second gear at low-ish speeds: the initial surge of torque from the Polo put it ahead of the Clio, but as soon as the Clio hit the power-band it made up all the ground it lost and passed the Polo with ease.

At motorway cruising speeds in-gear acceleration (4th and 5th) favoured the Polo, so if you ever try to pass one at 70mph in 5th make sure you drop to 3rd ;)

Over those horrible roads near the airfield it was solid as a rock, I was fighting to keep my Clio in a straight line (torque steer, bumps in the road etc) but Omar was just cruising. It seemed like it was pretty uninvolving to drive actually, I was probably having much more fun in the Clio...

...on the plus side it did sound pretty good though, quite surprising for a standard car. Far too heavy though, over 200kgs heavier than the Cup and 22bhp down, thankfully it has 220Nm from 1950rpm though, gets it out of trouble a bit.

  Dont have driverslicence
Why is VW producing a car that weights 1139 kilogram and it has only 150 horsepower... And than they called a GTI, 8,2 seconden to 62 mp/h ( 100 km/h ). :dapprove:

Cracking Photos, the last Polo GTi was like pulling teeth as ive been in one, can't comment on new one but it would look better 3 door and lowered ;)

Seen a Black one in weston last sunday...!

They are looking smart... then engine soo has potential for 200bhp with remap!!

always liked the look of the polo's, but this one tops them all IMO!!
