172 Discs for track day car

Me and my mate have a clio 172 track car that is barely used on the road. Ive been reading the forums and everyone seems to recommend the Brembo HC Carbon discs. I have two questions, would you guys recommend paying the little extra for the "xtra drilled" ones? The original discs could only manage about 4 laps before they went and needed cooling and we dont want this to happen again. Or, would you recommend another brand?

Standard HC discs will be fine.

That will be a pad problem.

We are using green stuff pads, but i think we were hopeful to say the least as we knew the discs were shot after the first track day . What pads do you recommend?

Hello, What is the best choice of brakes for a clio 2 tracktool? For the moment i will stay with the stock calipers but wich pads and discs would you recommend for track use? thanks

Brake fade with decent brake setup?

Hey guys. I experienced brake fade after quite a few hard laps at Donington National on the 16th. Can't remember how many laps but I was sticking to 15 minute stints. Current brake setup is as follows. Standard front discs and calipers with PBS Prorace pads. Brake ducts, Millers 300 brake...

I've been using Brembo HC discs and CL pads for the last 5 or 6 years of racing. They get hot under race conditions yes, but never had any significant fade or long pedal in the 40 minute races we do.
This photo shows how hot they get but they still work. Only this year am I upgrading to a custom set of AP calipers and 2 piece discs but that's as much to reduce unsprung weight as improve braking

If staying with the OE size, you can’t go wrong with the Brembo discs . I’ve supplied a lot of them over the years , and a lot for track and race cars

it’ll have been those pads that will have been the issue on your track day . General rule, firm pedal but not slowing down its the pads. Long/soft pedal it’s the fluid

for track use , either the plain or their Brembo Max grooved discs . With some suitable pads and fluid , will be a marked improvement to what you have fitted at the moment

@George@RTR_Parts what your thoughts on plain vs grooved discs? Only worried about 100% track / race cars

I spoke to George and ordered from him in the end. He was excellent with his advice. Basically have me a few options, but in relation to your question, we went for plain discs with ds1.11 pads and it's awesome.

Grooved discs increase pad wear. This means that if the disc has overheated and glazed then the pads will recover faster. With modern compounds and by making the right choice of pad for the temperature range the brakes operate you should never get to this point. You can therefore save money with plain discs.
I think the OE discs will run a little cooler than the Brembo's due to extra venting holes but they are more expensive.
The cheapest improvements are removing the fog lights and the inner arch liners to lower temperatures.
The next thing to do is stop using a road pad on track.

No worries, all the different disc types have their pros and cons. The grooved type discs can help with keeping the pad surface "clean" , but will wear the pads quicker.

As I mentioned above, a quality blank disc (like the Brembo HC or the revised Renault OE discs with the extra holes that I supply aswel) , paired with suitable pads and fluid, with some decent brake cooling from the front fogs is the best "bang for buck" brake set up and run by many track dayers and racers

If a budget in mind, it's always better to spend the extra money on the pad compound, and run the cheaper plain faced discs

It's horses for courses though, some people like the look of the Brembo Max or Brembo Xtra drilled, and run them on for the road for OE pads
