172 mod questions

Just got delivery of my 172 engine today and have been thinking about which are the best mods to go for on it!

Have came up with-ITG Maxogen induction kit,sports cams,de-cat/sportscat,port and polished head and the 4-1 manifold from a 182

Would these work alright together and maybe even take me up to 200bhp?

Also what are the pros and cons with throttle bodies and a turbo since they seem to give out the same power-250 bhp but the turbos almost costs twice as much!

Add modded inlet manifold to your list and re-map, you will see between 200-210 hp and 170-180 lbft with those mods.

Trottle bodies sound f**king sweet and the turbo will make it fly!!!!

not really sure about the cons, if any ;)

not sure how much all those mods would take you up too, i would expect 200bhp easily. if done right :p

Getting or trying to get to 200bhp isnt cheap m8.

With those mods you wont be far off 200.

Unless your keeping the car a while, i wouldnt take on TB or a Turbo convo....even bigger money !!

Going to a new job next week for 5 weeks so could have the cash for all the mentoned mods,maybe even the TBs but i dont know much about them!

cons with either with throttle bodies or a turbo will be the mpg takes a turn for the worst. But then again, if you were bothered about MPG, you're best getting a diesel.
I've heard good things about throttle bodies, and a few people on here are running them. Dont know too many with the turbo conversion though....
 
Throttle bodies sound amazing but unless your willing to pay probaly close on £10k you won't see 250hp. Yoz has TB's head work cams exhaust and high compression pistons and is only at 225~230hp. I'd just go for normal throttle bodies your looking at £3.5~4k I think fully fitted and mapped and with an exhaust you'd get about 210~220hp. throttl bodies have the weekness that trying to get 250hp is going to be hugly expensive.
Turbo well thats £6k or so and you need to rebuilt the engine and since neither the engine or box were designed for urbo its not the optimum solution. Drop a Megan RS or better still a VAG 1.8T engine is better value as there better engines and there more tunning stuff out there.
 
bit off topic here but...

are you putting the engine into your original car...(the one with the kit)...??

or am i thinking of another car..

It is my clio which has the kit on it which is getting the 172 convo done to it!

Alan,already been in to see the guys there and got a price and stuff as well as time scale-lookin at 1k to fit and 3 weeks for the job!

As for the Megan RS Or the Audi 1.8t my budget would'nt stretch that far,plus i have just paid for the 172 lump and i need to have this all done without my parents finding out!! lol

I have already spoke to Andy at GDI a couple of months ago about doing the actual swap and stuff,but at that time i was down in Kent plus i was going down the road of a 5GTT swap!

Now im back in Glasgow,well until fri and my wages are a wee bit less just now than when i was down south!

Also have a guy who will do the conversion for £750 and in 3 days but i think i will have more comeback with Torque if anything goes wrong!

Sorry to go off topic slightly - from reading the above am I correct in understanding that the 182 exhaust manifold can be fitted directly to a 172 with no modifications etc.?

Think so as its the same engine,just Ren have changed the size or design of them to give some more power

you have to bodge the exhaust to fit, and also remove the subframe to fit the manifold

is that a tuner up north???

I am constantly getting people up there that are looking for someone that can fit cams etc.... would be nice to recomend someone in the north of the country

Andy, Torque are up here in Hamilton (just outside glasgow) and its a couple of good friends of mine who own/run it. They have done all the work on my car and fitted the cams etc and they do have all the proper cam setting tools etc. If you would like to get in contact with them drop me a wee pm and i'll give you the details and who to ask for

Yip the guys at Torque come highly recomended!
Most places up here have gone down the Jap route but these guys cover everything and i have not heard a bad word said about them!
Also were very helpfull and that when i went round even though they were still moving into their new bigger premises!

Nice big yello supra there 1200bhp and thats without the 350bhp shot of Nos!! lol
