172 Speedo fault

Noticed that my speedo keeps dropping, so it will start off fine when I turn the car on but it seems that when I get into gear 4 or 5 the pin drops to zero. It also feels like there is a change in power when the pin drops. Notice it the most on the motorway. Any suggestions to what it could be ?

Start simple and replace the speedo drive sensor that’s on the gearbox. It’s the usual culprit for this fault, as it’s a mechanically driven electronic sensor.

Could that also have something to do with the change in power ?

It’s not something I’ve heard of before mate with it losing power.

I've had this issue of the speedo drop to zero. At first it was only doing it a few times then it would stay at 0 for 5 to10 seconds before going back to normal speed. Replaced the Speedo sensor and that fixed it.

I too had to change the speedo sensor on the gearbox on my 172. Same symptoms as your having and it was such an easy fix to change. Definitely worth changing it for the cost

It does change (I think) the throttle sensitivity in 4th and 5th gear, for which the ECU will use the vehicle speed to calculate which gear it‘s in. When speedo drops out, if you’re in 4th or 5th you’ll notice a change in response.

I had this for a while with my 172 Cup, with the added benefit of the odometer not going up, just sayin’.

You can buy a non OEM one but I bought a Renault one off ebay from a private seller - new £33.50
