172 whats that rummble

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
damn went n slid the car sideways in to a curb! not recommended

i hit the drivers side wheel on the curb hard enough to bend the subframe, so now ive had a new(2nd hand) subframe fitted and the car re-tracked. apart from the slightly off centre steering wheel the car drives as straight as it ever did

but right hand bends fine, left handers tho when you go round a corner at any kind of speed you get a rummling through the car like goining over cats eyes!

whats that? any ideas

cheerz

could well be a bearing yeah. They normally make a noise when there is weight on them. So if there is no noise when turning left for instance, it's likely to be the left front bearing.
My 205 had a rumble which turned out to be a REALLY ruined ball joint.

wheel bearing mm may be, i`ll nip out n check if a can

i woz thinking i`d done some more damage like bent a drive shaft r something

the rummble isnt there a low speed and you need to get a fair bit lock on to make it do it

cheers

any more ideas?

Sounds EXACTLY the same as my problem. I suspect a previous owner has hit a kerb as it's done it since I owned it. One year, two driveshafts, wheel bearing, ball joint and engine mount later, it's still there!...

PLEASE let me know if you fix it, it's driving me nuts.

BTW it's been in to Reno (several times!), Eurocarcare and Hillpower to try and solve with no success.

it aint any of the above its the wishbone: either the bolts that hold it on are not tight enough or the bushes are gone and its time to replace the wishbone.

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
yeah av been told today it could be the wishbone bushes by some guys at work. but the wishbones came attach to my `new` subframe, i will get it checked out though

also cv joint, ball joint wheel bearing and drive shaft, also hoping i havnt bent the steering rack

i am taking it 2 get check out 2morrow

cheers chaps

How do I check the wishbone bushes? Is there anything obvious or should I just replace them? I've spent a few hundred already trying to fix this noise and am reluctant to spend any more unless I can kinda prove what it is...

not sure how you check the bushes, i think you just jack the car up and see if the wheel will move/rock where it shudnt

i went to see the dude at the garage who seemed certain it was me steering rack or me wheels so i put a new alloy on and swapd the front and rear of the passenger side and went back still with me rumble

e didnt look at the car coz he said he checkd every thing as he went so i took him for a ride and he addmitted it could be a bush or a cv joint or bearing, so hes gonna check it out on friday before i order a new/2nd hand steering rack

so i guess a still dont know yet

i think with all the people who have looked at your car mate sumone must ov checked them bushes

Yeah, I've tried swapping alloys around with no success. New tyres too, balanced and had it's tracking checked about 5 times!!

You're right the number of people that have been out in it with me to demonstrate the noise and the number of people that have had their hands on it, I'm surprised that none have mentioned wishbones. Worth a check though, I spose....

Polyflex ones from K-tec are about £60 for the four.

Please let me know if your garage dude fixes it though...

I too have a rumble on a 2001 172 - it does sound like a bearing and the frequency is at the car speed - engine revs make no difference drive or freewheeling.

Last year a Van hit my offside wheel (drove off £900 bill) and bent a track rod (inner wheel was against the curb)- so I have a year old steering rack, track rods etc.

Also there is no difference in the rumble on left or right hand corners which might help locate a wheel bearing - mighty weird.
