182 Cup ‘Best Hot Hatch Ever’

I read this in EVO magazine, they voted it joint second with the Lotus Exige for best car of 2004, the 997 came first. They say it is old skool hot hatch thrills, none of the test drivers could believe how much fun it was to drive. "No over or understeer, it just grips and goes". It made me test drive one!

The driving position isnt too bad either, Ive been driving French cars for years now so it didnt feel alien to me.

I think this has been discussed to the death.

Theyd probably be nothing in it, if youre worried about the 20 kg weight difference, put on a K-Tec exhaust to save 8kg, put in less than a quarter tank of fuel and lose some weight and youll get pretty close.

Big G - The question was how would a 182 do vs the scooby!!!!!!!!

Do pay attention ;)

Im just waiting on the evo article that definitively decides which one is the best hot hatch ever.

And I reckon it would be a superb article. They could do a whole run of old school vs new test, like the poor effort AE did.

I did pay attention, did you read my post at all? I said "theyd probably be nothing in it" and went on to say that you could get close to removing 20 kg from the 182 (non-cup) if it bothered you that much.

It has been said that the Williams is quote "Gods own hot hatch"

Swervin, if EVO ever did that article it would be fannytastic. You could pitch the 205 1.9 gti against the valver, owned both and Id say the valver was the more predictable car handling wise.

AE did something crap but the idea had potential.

Gordini 5 vs 182. Amend that to include the willy I reckon

mk1 Golf Gti vs mk5

And so on...

Right i didnt realise that we had discussed to death 182 Vs Scooby, I thought we had discussed 182 vs 182 cup to death and my question wasnt related to saving 20kg on a 182, simply can the 182 match the scooby taking into account what was tested! it might just be simpler to take the question else where!

i find it better to just make a bold statement with no evidence or experience to back it up
;)
i know the williams has a great reputation but at one point it was like the 182 a new car that was highly rated but without the image attached. Making something a legend or icon requires something to be very good then some time to pass its not attained overnight. In 10 years time it would be interesting to see what image the 182 has.

the 182 will keep up with the scooby, there is nothing in it between a 182 with cup packs and a 182 cup

The willy is so good because it still hangs in there with the best on offer today. It may not be as fast or corner quite as quick as the 182 but its still there and as we know there are a couple of really quick ones on here.

So for half the cost of a 182 you could have a faster older car.It does apeal to a lot of people, both for budget and for looks and performance.

I do doubt however that the 182 will have the iconic status of the willy,it hasnt been rallied or anything and didnt have the impact that the willy did back then. There are now twice as many hatches to buy and this has saturated the market a little and in turn taken the shine off of any new hatch that comes out.

Also we are now fast approaching the peak of performance that 2wd in a hothatch can give. When the williams came out it pushed the envelope a bit farther than most of todays hatches can

The Willy has been named Best Hot Hatch for over a decade now....

So if the 182 Cup is the newly crownd king then.............Bothered.

The Willy is a great car to drive. I havent driven 182 as of yet, but from its reviews its a good hatch back...

It was only a matter of time till something came along and took the Willys crown. So if the 182 is now "The Best Hot Hatch".
Well, least Renault are still doing something right I suppose.

So it can beat a uk spec subaru - not that hard these days lol!!

Only kidding, lovely car but still see the williams as the best hot hatch and they did miss a fair few cars of the test that cost under 20k!!

It all depends on the track, the driver etc. I mean some tracks have proved faster for a subaru, some for a civic and some for the clio - I wouldnt buyt a car beacuse how a magazine rates it or how they think it drives.

The reason I buy a car is because i like the way it drives, i like the driving position, if the damn mag dont - SOD EM!!

Now Im trying to figure out after saying that why i drive a valver! lol!

The Cup has been available since September, but isnt really a better car, just cheaper and a little bit snappier on paper.

I have to be honest, id never heard anyone raving about the williams before i got a clio and started coming on here, i always used to think of it as, an over priced and expensive to insure valver. My best all time hot hatch is either a mk1 golf gti, or a 205 1.6 gti. After all if it wasnt for these early birds we wouldnt have such cool cars today.

I wouldnt, Ive driven two, and found the steering sh*t, so much so that it basically made the car slow through lack of confidence (for me) Bloody quick though!
