182 CUP power steering removal?

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
There's one thing that's certain, with no power assistance its going to make the steering a lot heavier. I can't imagine Renault would have fitted it even to the 172 Cups, which didn't have a/c, unless they thought it was necessary.

It was interesting that Renault chose to retain the hydraulically assisted power steering for the Phase 2 Clio Sports when it had an electrically assisted system that it could have fitted, supposedly because the hydraulic system has a lot better feel and feedback than the electrical system. But in the latest models its gone to electric because, supposedly, they sorted out the feel and feedback problems. Pretty much everyone's going over to electrically-boosted power steering. Its cheaper, simple, gets rid of the power steering pump.

So maybe what you could do was pull off the hydraulically-assisted system, including getting rid of the heavy power-sapping power-steering pump, and see if you can adapt an electrically-assisted system.

Get rid of the power steering pump. Get rid of the air conditioning like the 172 Cups. Change to an electric water pump (eg Davies Crag). And the only thing left for the engine to drive would be the alternator.

Getting rid of the water pumps IMO not worth it just stick with it that an alternator is what the Hybrid owners usually run and it makes a difference not running PAS and air con.

Electric rack works fine give it a speed feed from the ABS system and its stand alone.

Hydrlic racks were easy and cheap to fit hence why they did it plus they needed to ensure the electric racks worked fine in use.

Yozzas car has been driven by Frfreed etc without PAS before now but with a PAS rack (the reack withouth having pressure is harder than a proper PAS free rac) and they said it was heavy.

Best idea would be to ligthen the front end at the same time.

I'll be fitting a carbon bonet/Ali rad etc and removing the fogs/upper rad grill and heater and relocating the battery anyway. Its mainly if theres any benifit for increased feel/feedback etc. Ive driven non PAS cars all my life so I don't mind heavy steering.

Are there any non PAS racks that would fit a 182 Cup?

Also would 15" wheels make any diffrence?

Thanks.

You could make any number of racks fit I'd think the Mk1 might fit not sure though.

Cannot see wheels making a huge difference.

It should help feedback though but rose joining would also help.

without PAS its like pushing Vanessa Felts up hill, not nice, we lost 1.5 seconds per lap round Donnington last year without it
