182 FF or basic ish 197?

  Clio 182 Trophy
Each to there own. I've driven the options you're looking at, but you may want different things from a car. Asking people's opinion on here is a waste of time. You won't get an honest unbiased opinion, the 197 owners will tell you to get a 197, the Trophy owners tell you to get the Trophy. Go for a decent drive in all the options, then make your mind up.

Agree with this.

even a bogo version (no offence gaz) would look like this..

Looks nice in that colour. Which colour is it?

Indeed. Mine is a 'boggo version', but with the following options, climate, folding mirrors, rear tints 6 disk in dash changer..... the lights are not Xenons, but are the dedicated cornering lights lol. Lowered on H&R Coilovers. I have loads of pics if needed. Might purchase some spacers lol.

get a 197 its a newer safer car and certainley as nice as the 182 is there ten a penny now there in the £6k bracket and there pertty discreet.

with the 197 you could space it, lower it. get some decals etc.. make it look mint.

i'm not interested in modifying it, i like them kept standard.

I've driven a 182 so now i've got to test drive the 197 and see what i think of it. Going to look at the red 197 again on Saturday and take my dad with me to see what he thinks.

Brilliant in red...buy it:D

197's need a bit more stick to get them to drive quickly, but the engine is MUCH smoother above 5k to the limiter etc Less gruff tha the old lump, which sounded in pain 6k+. The 197 lump begs for more;) They are more refined, so feel less quick than mk2, but i've had them side by side (standard 182/197) and there is no noticible straightline difference.

no chap, it was MY 182, which was a dick hair slower than my OLD 172 Cup. ;) I'd happily prove to any 182 owner ;) And yes my dick is bigger ;) ;) :)

I'd get the 197 :) But I'm not you, so you shouldn't listen to me and should go get that test drive hehe! That appears to be at Xtreme if I'm not mistaken? They're very helpful and knowledgeable there IME, I'd be happy to buy from them.

I wouldn't get a 197 without the cup chassis.
have you driven 1 without the cup chassis?
I didn't get cup suspension because Im goin on coilovers when I have the dollar, however I can safely say that the standard 197 still handles really really well, easily the best handling car I've had in comparison to other cars I've driven all on modified suspension...

Yep, driven both. For me, it's the same as the 182, 182 without cup packs is far less desirable than with. The second hand market in 2 years will prove this (as it has with the 182's).

true, the cup packs will help resale defo. I thought you meant purely from a handling point of view, which tbh wouldn't sway my decision the handling/ride comfort compromise is just right on standard for me. Just want lower lol

Each to there own, but I found the cupped 197 the better handling car, with better steering weight and a more serious dynamic focus. Standard is more focused on ride, cup more on handling.

Drive both. 197 is physically much bigger. Prefer the drive of a 182 personally, though the 197 handling is a big step forward.

Right choice of coilovers and decent wheels and tyres make the 182 more desirable over the rear shunted mini megane.

get the 182 if you want to join the growing number of chav's that own them

tbh which ever you get, for the fun factor you cant go wrong

Am in agreement with you there Warren - That's why i waited and got the R27.
It always pays to wait when Renault introduce a new car.
I would say Renault have got their act together for the release of the Renaultsport Twingo as this will have both options available from the start.

I suppose the 197 will be a bit more friendly on the wallet insurance wise, again economy isnt a million miles away.

For the sake of depreciation (not that anything with renault on it keeps it) id buy a 197 for re-sale value.

Personally for the money id spend the ten grand on a Focus RS...

Exactly why i got mine. I wanted a 197, but also wanted it lowered. I could have *just* stretched to a Cup, but i opted for a better equiped (inside) 2nd hand 197, and with the money saved got the H&R's, wich are feckking superb tbh.......

£9K for a 182, seems expensive.

Why not buy privately and get a better spec 197?

I've been looking privately, but there isn't much about. I've seen a blue one quite close to me with xenons on it plus all of the standard stuff but was a 2006 '56' reg and that was 10,800, whereas the red one is 10,250.

Insurance isn't a huge problem, i've done some quotes and i'm getting quoted £450 ish fully comp.

I just hope its as fun as my MG to drive, thats going to take some beating!

I've done the same. 197 with a set of KW's. No point splashing out on the cup pack when you're gonna change the suspension anyway!

Personally if i had £9k to spend id rather have a "bog basic" 197 than a FF 182.

However if you want to spend a bit less on a motor and have some cash left over for a rainy day then youll easily have a 182 and change left over out of £7k.

I personally cant afford a 197 at the min (still an apprentice) however i have no regrets about my 182, sure it looks dated compared to the 197 but imo is still a good looking, well spec'd car.

I would just like to add that i am by no means a chav nor do you have to be one to own a 1*2. I just get paid a poor-average rate but like my cars and feel that ill strugle to get any other car thats as new, as fun and as fast for the same money

Guess i should now finish this post of with a couple of brap braps and inits...AYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE:)
