182 Front Discs & Pads kit

  182
All from K-Tec:

  1. Cross drilled discs with Ultimax pads - £116
  2. Cross drilled discs with EBC Redstuff pads - £146
  3. Brembo HC discs with Carbone Lorraine RC6 pads - £175
  4. Brembo HC discs with DS2500 pads - £186

What do people recommend? From what I can see the Brembo HC discs are not cross drilled but the ones in the cheaper kits are :S

Thanks.

As I understand it cross drilled discs are pretty pointless on a road car - I think the theory is the holes provide extra cooling, and probably help stop a glaze from forming (like grooves do.) But tbh I think they just get full of brake dust and other dirt, and weaken the disc - I wouldn't bother. (Although they are used as standard on some cars :S)

I've got Brembo Max discs and Pagid Blue pads. I like the look of the discs (although lots don't) but the noise they make is really irritating on a day-to-day basis. The pads are great though. Once my discs have worn out I'll see if it's ok to use the plain cut Brembo HC discs with the Pagids.

Most people seem happy with the Bembo HC/DS2500 combination. My opinion for what it's worth.

drilled discs are to release gases released from pads under braking. modern compounds do not do this so it is unnecessary. Drilled and grooved discs both add weaknesses to the disc making it more likely to crack under the constant heating then cooling from driving. grooves are designed to skim the surface off the pads to stop deposits being left on the disc. this is un-necessary with Carbone Lorraine (CL Brakes) pads as no material is transfered..

Other pad / disc combinations to think about are:
Carbone Lorraine RC5+ pads with either OMP Group N discs for £180.66
Carbone Lorraine RC5+ pads with Maxtorq Group N discs for £163.81
Mintex M1144 pads with Maxtorq Group N discs for 108.65
all these are available through us

the Mintex will do you well on the road or for light track use but will get fade with longer track sessions if you are pushing hard.

If you are worried about dust or noise you wouldn't want the CL Brakes rC6 compound - you'd be better off with the RC5+ compound which has been developed to eliminate this and still provides the high friction levels from cold to over 1000ºC which is unique to the CL Brakes range.

The Ferodo DS2500 will give you a good setup but the CL RC5+ is superior in my opinion.

Personally I'd reccomend you stay away from EBC pads as their quality control is not great and lots of them end up being poor quality

I'm not looking to spend that much, I won't be taking them on a track. Heard good things about the mintex pads. Maybe them on the Brembo HC discs? Will stop looking at cross drilled discs. Thanks for the info!

The Brembo HC discs are good but I'd find it hard to justify the extra cost over a set of the Maxtorq Group N discs which are v. good quality but without the well known brand surcharge

Useful info. Guess I shouldn't comment if I don't know the facts, didn't know the holes were for releasing gases.

Don't wanna hijack the thread, but, couple of questions -

1. My grooved discs sound really annoying, but there are some expensive cars out there that have them as standard (I'm thinking supercars) - surely the drivers of those cars don't put up with that noise. How do the car manufacturers deal with it? Is it because they design the cars, from the outset, to have that kind of disc? (i.e. sound deadening, suspension design and the like.) Or is it simply that different designs of grooved discs produce different amounts of noise/vibration?

2. When my Brembo Max have worn out (which unfortunately may not be for ages), will plain cut Brembo HC be ok with my Pagids?

Theres absolutely no need for drilled or grooved discs on a clio road car or on a track car for that matter.

My last racing car, bmw mini cooper circa 1075kgs inc driver was standard discs all round with braided lines and race pads. No fade at all and could take 12 laps in a row of flat out podium finishing race pace no problem.

Your kidding yourself if you think you need big brakes for the road on a clio, they are just for show!

I keep telling everybody this,we raced in Hungary with standard discs and ds2500 pads,40min around the Hungaroring and no fade.

Got myself Grand Scenic 1.9d 2004 calipers and Ferodo discs (300mm) and Premium pads and stoping power is incredible. ;)

I take it by 'big brakes' that's a reference to bigger calipers and larger diameter discs - nobody suggested those, did they?

I splashed out a bit extra on Max over standard HC's for the aesthetics (obviously wish I hadn't bothered now because of the noise.) I wouldn't put form over function when it comes to brakes, but as far as I was concerned they'd be at least as good as the standard HC discs, and I like the look. Bit jealous of the big Brembo calipers on later models but I personally would never spend such a substantial amount of money on something that clearly isn't necessary - the standard brakes are plenty powerful enough. Paying a bit extra for some grooves is no different to splashing out on a spoiler, or some different looking lights, or a change of colour for the wheels (as long as, like I said function is put before form when it comes to brakes.) The extra cost is naff all compared to what I spend on fuel, insurance, servicing, and the money I've lost in depreciation.

P.S. xr2racer, did you ever get through to Fancyplates?
