Interesting point made earlier by mr stromba.

is the 182 all about marketing or is it about improving an already good car?

My view isnt from the "its 10bhp and some exhausts" stable.

Because in my view its not a parts bin special, its had new parts developed to improve it, and some of these parts have been race proven.

What about everyone else?

Insert yozzas "toms back" post here VVVVVVVVVVVVV

Doing something to make a good car even better and sell some more cars, wheels of industry and all that.

Fiddling with an already good package in my opinion. At least you could "Choose" to have abs, esp, ac, thin glass, no interior or no spare tyre etc.

Should have been left as is, rather than mate the two and produce a car half in between. But its about making money, and its a new car to them!

Of course its a marketing exercise! Thats why its called a 182 and not a 180!

Just happens to be a good car as well!

Do you think Renault would have spent all the extra cash developing, marketing etc etc if peugeot hadnt produced a 180 Gti?

NO of course not!!!!

the 182 is not a car inbetween the cup and the 172.the only people who would say that are people who already have a cup or a 172.how can it be inbetween when its a tweaked version of everything renault has done to the 172 or 182s in the past.no matter what a guy in a 182 is gonna feel better when parked up to a 172 simply coz his is newer-and is advanced-but at the end of the day they are all top cars

erm its a cooking car they only released it to get rid of bits they dont want in stock any more same as all special editions (it is really) they just bolt everything on to it to get rid of it :)

it is also a dirty hybrid between a cup and 172 as it has the options of all the cup bits lol but has leather and climate and the rest of the 172 stuff

The first reviews usually come out very good for a decent hot hatch - Focus RS being and example.

Its only once everyones had a good go that you get differing views -

remember Auto Express saying the first 206 Gti was the best hatch ever in their first review! And even now they think its superb! Most know better.

The best thing about the 182 review is it was done by Evo. I trust them more than most to give a good balanced review - the signs so far are very good!

Manufacturers are always evaluating models and looking for ways to increase sales, so part hype I suppose - but only to ensure a succesfull launch a very good car. It will now further appeal to potential Civic Type R, ST 170, Cupra buyers etc.. - who are used to their luxuries as well as performance.

I think the hot hatch market is a very profitable place for them to be - with so many enthusiasts about. They obviously did their research and knew there would be a great deal of demand, especially after the success of the 172, and unexpected appeal of the Cup.

In their way they are offering a hybrid of the two, and by offering one model with options, customers only have one choice if they want a Hot Renault at that sort of price. Top idea.

All models evolve...

new technology and materials are always becoming more affordable and lighter etc...

I think its called evolution...

Do you think well get a clio Evo VIII?

That statement kinda suggest that the two cant be combined. Of course the 182 is about marketing (lets be honest, I suspect the Williams 1, 2 and 3 may have had a marketing shove behind them, too). In this case, renos specifically giving the Clio a spike late in its model life cycle (which is coming to an end). That this tweak happens to have resulted in a cracking car is an added bonus. And lets not forget - its easier to market a great car, than it is a crap one (esp a hot hatch).

In this case its self serving - marketing need to boost the cars appeal, so reno make it even better. marketing then benefits as it can boast about offering/having the best hot hatch. Everyone wins, so who cares what the motivating factors were?
