197 in Topgear 'Lifers'

Not sure if this has been mentioned before as so many threads have been moved recently, but the 197 is in the TG lifers section.

It will be getting a review in the mag for the next 12 months. I think they give it a very good review based on 1st impressions, not like the welcome the 1*2 gayboys gave it on here.

I'm looking forward to see what they say...

Wasnt sure myeslf but saw on in showroom whilst getting my MOT the other dy and they look alright, dont like the price though! Plus too many options, some of hich id have thought youd expect on the FF version!

you should see the accessories brochure you can make a 1.2 clio look really nice actually which is something knowone has mentioned. to do that to the last one you had to fit 172/182 bumpers but on the new one there are plenty of wheel and kit options.

i have to admit my first dirve i wasnt smitten, compared with the simple raw pleasure of a 172cup it couldnt compete. but in terms of shape, interior, build, spec etc.. 2 steps up.

i cant understand on thee biggest clio appreciation club in the uk if not the world and there is a handfull of owners and lots of people claiming to hate it ?

is there no future for cliosports now the 197 is out ?

i think with a few simple tweaks it would be equal in performance accelaration to 182 and have all the other qualities it brings. handling is fantastic

am sure it was mostly 172/182 drivers that hated it wasnt it.

i like it personally looks much better in person.

That yellow F1 style one looks sexy, but the racing blue one i saw at a meet was crap imo. Sadly i can't get a test drive as no renault dealers have one grrr.

i think you cant jump from a raw cliosport MKII/MKI into a MKIII and be blown away in the same style. it takes a bit longer to really appreciate it but i havent had the time to do that as i dont own one.

yeah i have never been in either tbh but can imagine its a little bit of a step down, but is it alot better quality build as in u pay for quality then not the raw fun to drive.

I think most people that have done a proper write up on gave balanced views on it. Problem is it is a very different car to the 172/182 and depends on what you want from a car.

Get yourelf up here, local main stealer hasn't got one but my local non main dealer garage has! Was tempted when i had my MOT done but there to nice to take for a 'ride' as it were (no pun intended).

it got a bad reception due to it being slower than the outgoing model and not being the 2.0T concept we envisaged - the concept even had 2 bucket seats in the rear!

The concept was pure filth! If the 197 was the samw i would have sold my house and both my kidneys to have one!

Exactly.

It's not that all 172/182 drivers hate them, it's the fact that some of us who have driven them have either not felt it was a step-up, or it was too refined.

A lot of the appeal of my 182 is that it feels over-engined; small car, big torquey lump. All of the 197's i've driven lose this, they feel like a car from the segment above.

The actual handling of the car was amazing imo, it just didn't have the feel and connected-ness that i want in a hot hatch. Great cars but they're not for me for another year or so...i'm waiting to see what Renaultsport have in the pipeline.

Ahh, nothing like abit of baiting after a few cans.. I'm just amazed at how much of negative welcome it got on a clio owners club. I could understand it if it was a CTR forum etc.

at first i wasn't too sure about the look of the 197...but, the more i read about it and the more i see it, the more i like it...it is a very sporty lookin car and i think the new clio is a stunnin car and if i could afford one i would get one

I will buy one if or hopefully when they drop the 225 lump in it.

I agree there has been a lot of 197 bashing on here from people talking rubbish but also there has been some really good honest reviews.

I think the general consensus is the 197 is a step up in terms of quality, its just lacking the out right pace, rawness and fun of the 182
