as per funky munky. it will drive off. it seems odd you can't lock it when the key is not ''present'' as per your situation for de frosting.

yes you can, and if you wanted to stop it without the key, you can just press stop twice.

Wouldnt it be like that episode of top gear were they moved hammonds car about 30 metres, that was the range of the card b4 the engine cut out

tried this my mate drove it out the car park were we were and bout 2 mile out of focus and car was still running

They can't just have them cutout as soon as the car doesn't detect the key as if something fvcked up with the system you don't want the car cutting out and putting the steering lock on on a motorway at 70.

That would just be very very scary!

i left my card on our fireplace for a week and the car out on the drive... only by sheer chance did i try to unlock the car and it worked... i never left the card on the fireplace again!

I've done it before and had to get someone to pick me up to take me back to mums to get the key!

Yesterday i left my wallet with the key in it on a table in Burger King in Bluewater.... about 20 minutes later in a clothes shop I went to pay for something and realised the wallet and key were missing... a mad panic between me and may mates retracing our footsteps and IT WAS STILL THERE on the table!

Luckyist man alive, espcially the fact it was still on the table

TBH it sounds to me like these cards are quite a serious security risk. So, if I left my card in my lounge, someone could potentially just jump in my car and f**k off with it? That's just peachy that is. WTF?

BRB...just off out to find a 197 and try the door...

no you have to have the key on you, it only works to start the car when you are inside it, you can unlock the doors when you are within about 1 foot.
You can start it, then lob the key out of the window and it will keep driving

I dont post much, but i had a good example that I thought id share.

A couple of years ago my mum dropped me off at a mates, and I had the keycard for her megane in my pocket, she left me drove all the way home before realising that i still had the keycard. If she had switched the engine off then she'd have been buggered, but she drove back and got them off me.

nope, to open the doors the key card has to be pretty close to the car ie within a couple of feet. if i walk say 10ft away from the car with the card you cant open it.

f**k 'em, my old Clifford alarm had the anti hi jack thing where everytime you opened and closed the door (with ignition on) you had to enter a code to this little panel within 1 minute iirc.
Otherwise there used to be like a countdown of beeps and hazards until eventually the engine just cuts out and the alarm goes mental.
IMO this is should be the same as the key thing.

To be honest the key card is no more a security risk than a key! - Its pretty much the same thing.

The facts are this.

You cannot open the car unless the keycard is on your person. I don't know about anyone else but mine is very sensitive. I have asked my GF to stand slightly away from the car and I have tried to get in and it just wont allow it.

The thing about defrosting your car with keyless entry is BETTER than if you have a normal key. Think about it, if you had a normal key the theif would have your car AND your key (the key would have to be in the iginition for the car to be ticking over). They would be able to stop and start the car anytime they liked. If you have the keycard in your pocket and they steal the car you know for a fact once the car has stopped running then it aint moving anywhere else after that!

I havent tried this, but I will later. If you start your car, walk away with the keycard and then press the lock button on the card, then im pretty sure it will lock.

There is no way on this earth that you have the key in your house and someone can get in your car ourside. No way.

Its a very reliable, very convenient system that works like a normal key but better.

i drove round to shops in mine and the key card was in the living room.

Shops are 2miles away.

Oh ok, I got the impression from what someone said that around 10m and the doors can be opened. I must have misread something. The defrosting thing is moot for me. I'm a man. Ice scraper and a coat. Done.

Plus I don't like the idea of leaving a a cold engine idling for 10 minutes. Get some load in there and up to operating temperature as quickly as possible (IMO)

Anyway, that's my security question put to bed.

Where was the key card when you started the car?

I will find it hard to beleive if you tell me it was sitting in your living room the whole time and the car allowed you in and to start it.

Mine says "card not detected" even if I hold my hand out the window with the key card in it and try to start it. The Keycard physically has to be in the car for it to start.

When you got out of the car at the shop did you stop the engine? If you did there is no way it started again and your keycard was 2 miles away.

If all the above did happen, then yours is well and truly broken.

10 metres? lol no. If your card is 10 metres away no body will get in your car. You litterally have to be very close to your car. if you are say more than 1 metre away it wont let anyone in.

this is where my 197 was always parked... said fireplace is halfway down the side of our house (near to the wing mirror on the Golf)

^^^ doesnt sound right, the car cannot be started with the key outside - in mine, if you are set in the drivers seat, open the window and hold the key outside of the "zone" (outside of the cabin basically), it wont detect it.

Are you sure you dont have the spare in the car somewhere!!!??

  Golf R
nope... definitely had one spare key in the house and other was in my wallet which was upstairs in the back bedroom so no key on my person or in the car... it told me that card wasn't detected but the engine was already running by that stage and i was off down the road

Sounds faulty based on what others are saying, although I'd be a bit worried about faults with that system. Oh well it's a Renault I guess.
