AcidicDavey's Liquid Yellow 182!

Hey all.
Well well well, I went and bought a new car on Wednesday (08 June)!

I put a note on said car I've had my eye on for quite a while, basically saying "I've got a 172, looking to buy a 182, would you consider selling yours?" Differently worded I admit but you get the message.
Much to my surprise 2 days later I get an email saying that I'm in luck, he's selling it soon as he's got a new car on order, happy days! We exchanged a few emails over a week or 2 until he's ready for his new motor.

So I'm now the owner of a rather rare Clio 182 in Liquid Yellow. :)

First photo the evening I got it...

Now I have 3 long term project cars already so don't expect a huge amount of updates but I'll try to keep this thread fresh :)

So, I took some photos of the little blighter the day after I got it before I started doing anything with it.

Speedline Turini Wheels with nearly new Toyo T1R tyres all round. Don't worry, I have the centre caps, they're not fitted as they've been painted the wrong colour but I have some Gunmetal Grey Ford paint that should match so I'll paint them soon.
Suspension is made of standard Renault shocks and Eibach Pro-Kit springs, a little high maybe but it handles and rides extremely well.

The interior - although it's clean it's not clean.
Got a couple of nice bits being a metal foot rest, genuine Renaultsport floor mats and a nice JVC head unit.

The alcantara sections on the front seats are stained and bobbly, I'll sort the bobbling no problem.

But this is really the sort of issue I'm faced with, it's just quite grubby, the finish on some trim on these cars is coated in something that goes nasty which is a right pain.

Now the one thing wrong with it, the gearbox!
Despite having a receipt in the history for a complete gearbox rebuild (all syncros, bearings etc) only 18 months ago there is a tiny crunch into 3rd if aggressive and a slightly bigger crunch into 4th. It doesn't crunch if you let the engine go back down to idle before selecting 4th, it's like driving a pre war car lol. Also it whines in 5th!

So yeah, a great little car other than the 'box!

That was good timing on your part then eh, dropping on a ly just before it's in sale. Jammy bugger. Looks in good condition keep it tidy and it's a winner.

had my plastics do the same, its minging and weird stuff. Just replaced the handles with some cheap spec plastic non coated ones that I got off here for a tenner. Quick respray job done.

Epic timing, Mike had the car for nearly 3 years and I just happen to pop the note on the car just when he's about to sell it, fantastic!

They paid a bout 1k for liquid yellow paint but didn't get the spoiler pack 😧

Lovely colour mate, jealous!

Yeah no Cup packs sadly (well it might have the Cup suspension pack, I haven't checked!).
I could have sworn it had a Cup rear spoiler on it though when I went to put the note on but I just ran up to the car, put the note on it and pissed off, I was scared of getting stabbed if the owner ran out shouting 'Wtf are you doing around my car!' lol

Potential to be extremely nice.

Cheers, it's already fairly nice :)

Thanks for the tip. I'm used to this sort of soft touch finish in one of my other cars - the Blue Volvo V70 in the background, all the buttons go sticky over time so I over the years have replaced them all!

Looks awesome chap, great base for a little project and nicely done with the note!! Just shows, sometimes, it's worth taking a punt!

Cheers, absolutely worth the punt, first time it's worked for me!

Good luck with the plans

If you need the box looking at i can recommend a chap in Lye, Birmingham ish. Not to far from you.
Nice looking beast

I certainly do, could you give me their details please? :)

Cheers man, 'tis a nice colour, definitely yellow :p My camera must have been on the wrong setting as I agree in the photos it does have a hint of orange too it.

Looks lovely, and awesome timing!

Is that an Iceberg 172 Cup as well?! Talk about me being jealous!

Will keep an eye out for you around Herefordshire anyway

I don't usually have good timing when it comes to all the things that matter (cars and girls!) but this time I had luck on my side!!

Nah, just a smart looking ordinary Iceberg 172 which is currently for sale ;)

Cheap car

Sold now :). I enjoyed that little car and buying it meant I gained interest in these little buggers and ended up with the LY, I doubt I'd have put that note on it if I hadn't bought this one :)

Love ly

Nice buy

Cheers, I'm pleased with it :)

For the gearbox try Roger at Roger Bayliss transmissions on 07850 399988 he's done my race boxes diffs etc for years, does an excellent job at a fair price. Tell him Mac from VXS gave you his details.
HTH

Thanks for that mate, I guess the money from the sale of the 172 now has a use!

"

Well that didn't take long and a lot of car for not much money, Id have had it at that money if I hadn't bought my 182 a month back.

Not done much with the car yet. Added a ClioSport sticker to the rear window and cleaned behind the rear number plate as I got a new plate.

I also went about cleaning the belts this afternoon as after 11 years they were a bit mank!
I used a hot bucket of water with Fairy Liquid and a scoop of Vanish stuff, left them to soak for an hour plus then scrubbed with a nail brush, came up great!

Top work fella, that RS badge looks fine to me! However the ever-so-slightly-wonky number plate would drive me insane, sort it out :grimacing::up:

Nice work with the belts!! Always amazes me just how dirty they get. I mean, over the years have people's clothes really been that dirty!? lol!

I put new plates on my 182 as well, when I fitted the rear one however I simple put masking tape all round the one on the car as it was perfectly straight, so then when I took it off, I then had the template to fit the new one! Simples

Don't worry, that rear plate is pissing me right off, everytime I look at the car it's what I see, it has me gently rocking in the corner!

Love liquid yellow, top work on those belts!

Thanks for the tip, bit late now haha, oh well.
*Still gently rocking in the corner mumbling to myself.

Good job on the belts, look loads better and a job I need to do.

It's a very satisfying job although I probably did look a little odd to passers by :p

If you've tried the bucket method for the belts and they still haven't come up well enough then try the power wash technique. I think I read somewhere say you'll need a second person to hold the belt out flat against the glass (so it doesn't flap about) and blast the bugger :)
___________

Anyway, only thing to update with the car is that the pesky airbag light has decided to come on, obviously I was wrong to presume I could move the driver's seat without upsetting it haha!

Put up a wanted post for some bits if anyone can help?

Thursday another minor fault developed, a slight blow from the front of the exhaust. The decat was just reinstalled after the car was MOT'd earlier this month so I presume it just needs tightening up a bit/re-fitting. Yay, old cars, don't you love them?

Anyway, here's a random pic of the car I took earlier, I'm yet to clean it in my ownership sadly, terrible I know!

Here's one of my other cars too as it's looking nice and clean atm. My 98 V70 that we've had for over 9 years now, mind it is quite a different car to then! Currently just sat there as I only have one car going at a time!
Don't worry, the car does have matching alloys, just I put a spare on the front just before I took it off the road in December as I had a spectacular blowout! The wheels in case you're interested are Porsche 996 Turbo Twist IIs

But that V70 looks well smart especially on the Porsche wheels, what's the spec?

(just to totally steer your thread in another direction, sorry 😂 )

I made a start on the centre caps as they were painted the wrong colour when the wheels were refurbished (go figure).
I hate the look of the car without caps on but look at these!

Not sure whether to leave the diamonds black or not?

Anyway, I washed the car yesterday, not got the DA out on it yet as the car is covered in tar spots and I don't have anything to remove it yet.
But, it comes up really well, the bright colour helps to hide any swirl marks etc :)
