Adieu, power. It was nice knowing you.

Bought a K&N induction kit for £10 today from Halfords. Not for a 172, but it looked like itd fit, so I gave it a go. Went on okay, so took the car out for some AP22 testing. On the same bit of road, the car was 0.5 slower to 60mph and 1.5 seconds slower to 100mph. Ah well, just goes to show that the hot air theory isnt just, erm, hot air.

LOL. Hot air is ok in its place. But under your bonnet aint the place... You can get aftermarket filters for the 172 which work well.

yea you need a Viper on it mate, in heat like today you will definitely be losing noticeable power with a normal I/K...

Not sure how much use a viper would be. Its essentially the same as the standard airbox. On a mk1 172, the air is picked up from the two slits under the passenger side headlights. Cant see how a viper is going to do anything more than the std. airbox with a high flow panel filter in it. And £250!!!

Ill have a look at it Rhys. Sure I can knock somethin up for ya to get cold air in there.

Rhys, from what Ive read and heard, the mk1 induction might be huge but it is far from efficient

viceroy - Im going to try again but this time relocate the IK behind the passenger side headlamp. The vents below the lights seem to be the source of cold air for the std box, so Ill try there.

I dont get the design of the Viper though, they use carbon fibre, right, good for keeping the old heat out, and what shall we use for the rest? Erm metal, yup that conducts heat like a goodun, top choice. Thats why i chose the BMC, all carbon fibre/plastic construction. Anyway like a few have said, a good air feed is just as important, break out the 100mm ducting ;) I dont know much about the 172, but if you are purely after performance just junk the fogs, best thing i ever did on the valver, get a nice scoop in there.

That could work I reckon.

Yeah fogs are for losers! Its like the three stages of modifications. Most people start off driving an old sh*tter that doesnt have foglights, and you want them badly. Then you get a motor with fogs and think theyre the nuts until you get fed up with people flashing you cos you drive around with them on all the time. Then you reach the ultimate zen level of having a car with factory fogs, that you take out just to replace them with air scoops! HARDCORE!

sealed is the way forward, not lost any power today in the heat....with the k&N lost loads when hot!

Carbon fibre isnt that good for keeping the heat out really if u think about it. dark colours absorb heat, carbon fibre is black/grey. best thing would be to have a reflective material surely?

yeah the colour is doing it no favours, but its the nature if the material thats doing the work - good insulator. Hence why it is used pretty much in all kinds of racing for air boxes and ram induction from hot hatch single series to GT monsters.

Ought to have a box where u could stick on of them cool bag jobbie things in the box. Them things you stick in the freezer lol.
