Advise on aux belt/cambelt and future 428 cams

  182 ff
Another stupid comment.

Any decent garage wouldn't possibly fit parts you have supplied and warrant them.

It wouldn't be any cheaper you buying the parts and a specialist fitting them.

actually it is for me
I got quoted £180 from a specialist to have all my belts fitted and, dephaser pulley ,if I bought my own parts (£240),so it works out a lot cheaper for .. so all in is £420... I guess that is really stupid .. but if you can get it cheaper with Renault parts good luck to you..

My 55 182 is on 54k miles. Just found out its never had a belt replaced and ive just noticed a belt squeal at cold start for a min. Then fine.

The dephaser isnt rattling yet, and i want some 428 cams.

Question is, is it worth replacing aux belt now? As later this year i want to buy some 428 cams along with the dephaser change, belts etc.

Just as a quick reference have a look under the bonnet near the bonnet catch, I couldn't find my paperwork for belts and there was a sticker inside with the date and mileage showing full belts change Renault, not seen this before but still had them changed for piece of mind.

Regards Russ......

Jesus, that's nearly due its second cambelt and would be past its third aux belt change... YOU NEED TO GET THAT SORTED ASAP. Don't waste your money on 428 cams either as they really aren't a great cam given the others on the market. Don't scrimp on not getting a dephaser pulley fitted whilst getting the cambelt done either, as it'll only start rattling once you've changed the belts...

If you don't take this advice, i'll offer you £500 when the belt shreds itself and takes the engine with it.

Nick

What are the best cam's to use?
Also cambelt is due every 5 years- remember belts perish and age...

Never heard of him, any good? I dont want no rookie...:p and Belper mate. Long eaton does sound alot better though!

He is the man, check our his Traders Section on the Forum... I could name 10+ people I personally know who can recommend his work.

If you are local there is no reason to travel any further.

Sadly no sticker!

Best quote so far is £1445 with 428 cams. £1505 with 438 k tec only but i live so damn far from k tec

Not read the whole thread, but I'd be getting the whole lot done now, as soon as possible. If your belt is over due it could snap at any minute.

I bought my 438 cams from K-Tec (£600 I think), I paid a specialist (MWM) to do a full cam belt change and fit the cams (£450), I then paid MWM for mapping (£300).

buy the cams yourself, take them to your local specialist to fit whilst doing a full cam belt change. Then take to Paul at RS-Tuning for mapping (Assuming he is the closest decent mapper)

Ive sent off for a quote cheers. Ive got £1255 inc VAT from Four ashes and thats with the 438 cams. But no remap.
Need this done yesterday.

You have to remember that fitting cams is pointless unless you have it remapped, it'll affect mpg and won't be a lot quicker without a map. So as Gray and Martin have said you'll need to factor in £300-400 for mapping them also. But it could wait a month or so I'd have thought before doing it so it doesn't become too costly.

Four Ashes is looking good so far, giving me a free courtesy car too. Il just have to find a remapper close by afterwards.

Get the belts and cams fitted at Diamond Motors, Long Eaton.

Don't drive like a tool with cams fitted and the car unmapped, keep revs below 4K.

Get the car mapped at RStuning, Leeds.

It cannot get much simpler than that.

Matt,

As has already been said, you need to get your belts done asap and given this forum has a huge number of experienced members I'd take their advice and get it booked in with a reputable, trusted & highly-regarded local RenaultSport specialist like Mick at Diamond Motors. Can you afford to take it elsewhere if they f**k the job up?

As for cams, if you can afford it then get Mick to fit these at the same time then take a trip to your nearest reputable & experienced RenaultSport mapper - Paul at RSTuning in Leeds.

The advice here is pretty clear, hopefully you get your car sorted before you experience any catastrophic failure. Taking any course of action other than that outlined here is a risk you're welcome to take, but if it was me I just wouldn't bother taking it anywhere else, even if it was cheaper.

I know a while back someone was offering a cambelt change and cam package for £995 cant remember the details though..

I paid about £1000 all in for belts, dephaser, Piper cams and a remap at RS tuning in Leeds

Piper cams are cheaper right, but the £1445 was from RS Tuning also. Lucky fellow.

Im gonna be buying the cams then taking them to Diamond, going for 438 and i might add some matched inlets and a KTR induction to the mix.

If im gonna be out of pocket, i may aswell be out of pocket with some style.

You looking for big power or nice smooth delivery of power?

I've got 197 cams and it's transformed the car, pulls strong and sounds awesome.

Matt I have 438s with ported inlets and a piper filter remapped and idles at 1k and it pulls strong , you will be happy

The 438s are good cams. And as long as you are getting them mapped by someone with a brain they will make a noticeable power increase. Mine were great. My mapping, not so.

You are in good hands with Mick though.

Aye il be straight up to Mick once im done. My question now is buy Ported inlets or K tec induction before the remap. On a 182 i dont think inlets are worth it unlike a 172.

Depends if the inlets in your 182 are RS stamped ones. Otherwise IIRC they're identical to a Mk2 172.
