Airbox question

My friend recently drilled his airbox on his Rover. I didn't personally agree with this as it's a bodge job in my eyes just boring holes in things, although it suits him down to a tea. Anyway I popped my bonnet to look for possibilites, as in fairness, his car does sound a lot better.

I was confronted by a mass of black plastic and although I located the airbox (Quite the trained mechanic you see) and the fluffy pipe/intake it was covered by a lump of plastic that covered the entire engine. It's a 1.2 16v (Yes I know, breathtaking as standard) but I'd just like a nice little rumble without investing in an exhaust just yet. I don't quite understand how it works though so any pictures of filter-ised 1.2's would be handy or any tips/comments would be nice.

Please note I want something highly subtle and want to avoid boaring holes in everything if possible. Want something a bit more sophisticated and less crude hehe.

JACKO CUP 172!

It might sound nicer, but all the extra hot air that is being drawn into the engine through the new holes will make it sluggish as hell.

Nono, I don't wanna do that please. Read the question I don't wanna start boring great holes in things, looks stupid. Apart from that drilled box it is actually a Rover 214 yes, but it's a half decent one because the previous owner was actually Rover, was one of their demo's so it comes with all the little add-ons, all standard. Air-con/Alloys/CD Changer/Leather. Not a bad one really.

Anyway, read what I said guys, I wondered whats the more professional alternative to a bit of subtle noise. Like I said I don't wanna put holes in things it looks shoddy but a quiet rumble would be nice. I don't also understand how I get to the airbox as it's all covered in a mass of black plastic. Does this top covering come off? I guess it does. Any pictures would help cheers.

Like I said (again, I shall stress this) I DO NOT wish to follow his path and drill holes, I simply wondered cos of the strange look of my engine is there any proper alternative available to make a bit of noise. All I see is a flat piece of black plastic I can't imagine where I'd bolt anything in.

Cheers.

  cooper s full areo kit...
lol, Its still a rover, that aside jokes.
Induction kit buddy, ur way forward if thats what your after, Top of it comes off, take it all out, unbolts, cant remember what/where they are and you get an induction made for the car and bolts in standard place, WIll roar more but it breath in hot air unless you put a cold air feed in and a heatsheild.
Hope this helps
