An up date on my blown engine.

Well went to the garage today where i'd had my cambelt done two weeks ago and aux/belt came off 750miles later.
I told them about what reno/you lot have said about replacing the aux/belt with new if taken off to which they replied was aload of shite!
They hadn't fully striped the engine at that time so i went back later but before i went back i phoned Trading standards and told them the story. They said if i could prove that the belt had broke due to them removing ad refitting it then i had a case, She said they would have to do the work for nothing or at least offer some discount. Then qouted the 1982act of fair trading blah blah blah.
So i went back armed with this. When i got there he had done a search on the tinter net on cambelt changes and special precations and there was no mention of aux/belt change. He said i can see your pissed off so we will do the work at cost, so he has qouted me £450 for a

New cambelt kit
8 outlet valves (all inlet ok)
Head reworked
Head gasket kit
Aux/belt and pullys
Crank shaft.

Think thats it. What happend is the aux/belt came off/faild, wrapped around the bottom pull till it was so tight that it's bent the crank shaft throwing a piston out a few degrees and smashing two valves but he said he may as well replace all 8.

At £450 i doubt he is charging labour either. Still not good but i was expecting over a grand and they have lent me a car while the work is being done.
They have offered to do it at cost so i didn't bother mentioning The T/S .

I need it in writting from reno or someone to say the aux/belt needs doing.

Think he said the belt had wrapped up that tight it had bent it, thats why it has smashed two valves, the cam belt was still on when they cracked it open.

Any decent garage/mechanic will insist you should have aux belt done when cambelt is done. After all I think you have to take aux belt off to change cambelt so why not fit a new one?

did they also measure the length of the lower crankshaft pulley bolt? when refitting it

did they use the offical renault locking tools when changing the belt? (ask to see them)

did they set the tensioner on the cambelt correctly

i'll bet £1 they've cocked up the belt change and are trying to cover their arse by blaming the aux belt

how much did you pay first time? have they ever done one before?

you don't bend crankshafts lol!

bloke sounds as if he's feeding you bulls**t

I may have it wrong then, i don't know much about engines and that but i'm sure he mentioned the crank shaft was fooked.

Why would it bend some valves if the belt was still intact?

£345 first time around, don't know if they have the proper tool.
Why would it do so many miles before going bang? Ive also checked my servicve book and the belt hasn't been done before acording to that anyway and i think i have read 32k or 3years. Car is 5years and 28k on clock.

because the crankshaft pulley bolt may have been stretched/not torqued up to the correct setting

non of the pullys (2 camshaft and one crank) have locating pins etc, they're tapered fit and held in position by friction (ie the bolt on each pulley holds them in place)

the crankshaft pulley bolt has to be removed to swap the belt

IF

a) they didn't measure the bolt for length, it may have stretched too much and snapped
b) they didn't lock the crank and/or cams in place
c) they didn't use the correct torque on the bolt

you should also slacken off the camshaft pulleys when swapping the belt, but it isn't always neccesary

  Lionel Richie
if they pulley comes loose as the engine is spinning the crank will keep spinning but the cams will stop

bang, 1 fucked engine

It's ok if you know what you ae talkin about but i haven't got a clue.

no chance an aux belt would never throw an engine out like that, if they did the belt change one of the pulleys has spun and fooked it

  Lionel Richie
i'm not an engine builder, but speak to BenR

but if it was me doing the work i'd just swap the engine, but that may'be the lazy option! LOL

aye it can on a 172/182, if the auxbelt comes off or snaps it normally (9/10 times) gets sucked into the cambelt

  172 cup'd extreme
Pully snapped on mine aux belt wraped round the lower cam belt pully cambelt went out. All it did in the end was bend 8 valves. everything else was ok there was no piston damage.

Well after this is put right she is up for sale, ive lost all faith with this car now.

Something else he said. He was gonig to put a new cambelt on but the pully wouldn't ned changing again cause they were only done 2weeks ago. Is this ok?

  Lionel Richie
idler pulleys will be ok

just to clarify

2 x cambelt pullies (inlet has VVT)
2 x cambelt idler pullies
1 x cambelt tensioner
1 x crankshft pulley

Will this engine be weak and liable to go again after this?

I wouldn't even trust them to rebuild it

I'm with Fred on this....they obvously made a c**k up changing the cambelt...aux belt was probably okay.

It's not the cars fault mate. If they've got it wrong it's their fault.

There's alot of material on the web, and in the 'zines, that says this car needs to be serviced by someone who knows what they're doing. And that means probably NOT reno either.

Other than specialists who know these cars who's going to be bothered measuring bolts and the like?

Generic Lil' Villiage Garage Head Mech...?

"Nah just stick it back in there, is only a little clio innit? We've spent long enough gettin the thing apart Dave, I'm ready for breakfast. Full English, your buying..."

I've had loads of 'trouble' with mine but (hopefully) that's all behind us now, and I'm loving it.
