Another 197 test drive

Looks - awesome
Handling - awesome
Engine - awesome
Speed - ok

I was very impressed with everything, but it didnt 'feel' as quick as my 182, especially nearing triple figures. I love it, but I cant bring myself to spend 16k on one when I can get a Meg for 14k

Appears a better car in every way than the 182, except performance and fun factor which are probably two of the most important factors in a hot hatch

1st and 2nd gear I was waiting for the action that never came. 3rd gear on a winding B was where the fireworks began as I threaded it along the tarmac. Superb car. Out on the DC though it felt pretty slow if I'm honest.

I LOVE the 197 but it really doesnt feel very quick at all IMHO.

I couldnt consider it as an upgrade, as I would like the same or more performance, and the 197 simply doesnt offer it.

NB. Am I the only one who has noticed the steering wheel is slightly angled away to the left?

I know what you mean about upgrading, I cant see the point in buying the 197 when the 225 seems better in every way. I just see the 197 as a mini 225 and I think I would rather spend the money tuning my 182 than upgrading to the 197.

I think this quote from 4car sums it up really

"So for £15,995 you get a fully-loaded Clio which is genuinely fast and capable. But sadly, this latest effort lacks the real sparkle and engaging personality of past hot Clios - which is a real shame"

By the way what did they offer you for the 182? and how much did they want for the 197?

NO! i just drove our demonstrator round the block with a customer, and i noticed that the steering wheel was angled to the left!

I dont think there is any comp looking at that photo. It makes the 182 look so dated.

I prefer the word "classic".

The 172/182's loook a pile better than the 197's. Easily.

It's like they've tamed the beast and tried to go too 'modern' with the shape. Remember when they did it to the Imprezza and we ended up with the awful rounded lights?! :dead:

Roy, the 197 looks ENORMOUS next to your car!

It is a bigger car, but it doesnt look fat or oversized in the flesh. It's a fantastic sexy looking machine

By the way, before the test drive, the 197 had a 'Clio' plate where the number plate should be. My enthusiastic technique must have worked it loose LOL. "I think you really jarred something loose there tiger" :clown:

The salesman shat his load when I got the back out in a twisty downhill S-bend and approached the quickly closing junction with the tryres chattering under extreme braking

I agree. I'd take the 197 tomorrow if I thought it had the performance. Maybe I need to drive one on my own. Plus my test car only had 40 miles on it. Hmmm I AM thinking about one of these now. SO nice to drive. Planted. Immense turn in and composure.

You test drove anything else roy? Focus ST etc???

No mate, but I am going to try and get a drive in a Meg tomorrow, and an ST. I wont be buying the ST though as I simply dont like the looks.

was that mick
i went in that car last week did not see his face while driving had my wife next to me and him in the back
probably done the same route as me through the s bend to the a5 i had a bit of traffic about
where abouts do you live dont c many cs'ers around dunstable

Yeah the back out bit was on a ragged twisty B between Caddington and the A5. I was loving the car until I got back on the A5 and then it felt pretty slow.

I'm not from Dunstable mate - I was visiting

Must admit, one of the reasons I'm looking forward to Brands trackday is so I can get my hands on a 197 for a couple of laps, just hope the brands cars have been run in more than the brand neweys they had at Oulton last month!!

Why worry? They have driven the car far harder than you will?

Well in my case, today, that might not be true LOL

How can you do a fair performance comparison with a brand new tight engine, I remember my 172 took several k before it really opened up, the 197 will be tighter than a camels arse in a sandstorm

all cool :)

need someone with a 182 to take me into our local reg vardy, think thats only way im gonna get a test drive :) only 19.

guess if they assume ive got the 182, mite think ive got the funds for a 197 and let me av a play

That's a valid statement. After 18 months of owning a fully ragged 182Cup , it's hard to know, but I remember my 182 feeling faster than this 197 when it was new. The big differemce is that the 197 doesnt have the 5k kick, so nothing ever really happens...

Not at all. Valid statement as I said. Its very tricky to make a call but the 197 felt appreciably slower in a straight line than even my 182Cup did when it was new. However the same might be said now if I drove a new 182Cup (if there were any). The 197 'slowness' doubtless comes from the lack of the 5k kick.

On the right road it felt able to carry more speed than my 182 so in that respect it felt faster. It just felt slower dragging down the DC, but then the RS Clio was never that type of car.

Put it this way. This time yesterday I wasnt thinking of a a 197 - now it's on my shopping list after having seen it in the flesh, and having driven it for 15 minutes. That must speak volumes?

I had test drive today, very impressed. Had a drash on motorway then on the way back on some country roads. Love the interior, as per other peoples comments the car didn't seem quite as pokey as my 172 though the 197 hasn't got many miles on the clock.
I haven't yet ordered mine as I am waiting for the salesman to call me back on Monday to confirm the deal, I kept pushing for a good deal :)

The spec I discussed was Albi metalic blue, Xenons, Climate Control, Mp3 headunit and rear tints. Also to p/x my 172.

Will post more on Monday when I know what is happening, also was told it would be early october before I could have the car.

Picture of the 197 I test drove (Same colour as I want to get)

I rekon a realistic eventual price for the 197 will prolly be 14-15k after the initial dealership piss taking has clamed down (17k??? come on!) One thing to bear in mind though if your thinking of a meg, when the new megane 250 comes later this year its rumoured to have LSD so price will prolly rise to 18-19k (from a realistic 16-17 k from dealers at the moment) so you can see that the 197 will eventually sit a bit more sensibly into the range

There was one today in the Trafford Center, in red. stunning looking car, the interior looks lovely, and was quite suprised at how nice it was! Looks better in the flesh than in pictures.

Apparrantly the woman was going on about that one being a turbo? But its not out yet for a few months?? Anyone know about this?

BF is interested but thinks its abit expensive for what it is

No turbo Donna, women and cars eh!! ;)

I need to get a test drive, I have no intention of buying one. Its not that I think its a bad, in fact I actually quite like the look of it and the performance isnt too shabby. Its just I cant help thinking about what else I could buy with that money.

On the subject of test drives, I had to sign a forum with a £1000 excess when I drove a LCR, gave it a bit of stick, but not massive amounts! The sales guy was telling me to cane the CTR, he loved it when I dropped it into 3rd on the motorway! lol
