been into arnold clark stirling and saw a brand new 197 cup in nimbus and cant stop thinking about changing the 172 for it, only thing im worried about is how its going to be compaired to my 172 struggling to find anywhere with a demonstrator to try one and im not a fan of the 200

so whos changed, give me your opinions, anyone not been happy with the change/drive?

i love the looks, will likely love the brakes and the chassis, just the power im worried about being heavyer!

I would've thought Arnold Clark would let you go for a test drive in it mate.

They do at the one round the corner from my place.

its a brand spanker so doubt they're going to let me take it out, ill give them a phone monday morning see what they say!

nimbus with the black rubbing strips and black mirrors, black wheels. looks the tits!

only other thing thats getting my mind going is 14k, my mate paid less than that for an impreza sti and getting 400bhp out it!! lol

I changed a mildly modified 172 Cup to a 197. Would i ever go back .... would i F*ck!

+1

Swapped my 182 8 weeks ago and im loving my 197 still... Pleasure to drive and always puts a grin on my face, Much more refined than my 182 and guess what... No rattles lol !

I'd defo recommend it if you fancy thechange why not, Only live once

I was gonna wait for a 200 also but its so gash from the front that it put me off....

more grown up, better chassis, more refined. Alan changed 182 to R27 page him

I'd love an R27 but can't afford it at the mo. Also do you need to go any faster?! I find the 172 / 182 plenty fast enough for the roads. If I go for something stupid fast I'll prob start to acuumulate points on my license

All depends on what you want it for, and what you expect from it.
If you like a more raw car, more thrilling to drive, keep the 172, if you want a bigger car, that doesn't rattle (yet), more comfort take the 197.

I drive both a 172 and a R27 on regular basis and i still prefer my 172, i don't know what it is but the 172 allways seems more fun to me

I went from a 197 to a 182 Trophy. Prefer it tbh, but then my wife has a meggy 225, so we have a nice variety

Performance-wise the 197's get quicker with mileage, so give it death from new ;)

I'm convinced my lightly modded 197 is quicker than my 172 and 182 ever were!

yeah spoke to alan a few times about the change but i always end up chickening out!!

most of my mates have japanese busses running 300-400bhp which i cant afford to run so it needs to have a good chassis to help keep up, just worried the 197 wouldnt be as quick, what sort of torque do they have as standard?

Went from a 182 to the r27, find the r27 much better. More refined and feels better made. Now feels faster, probably wasn't to start off with, but now i'm upto 42k miles its allot faster than the 182 ever was!

Went from a 172 to a 197 cup and never looked back. The only thing i occasionally miss is cruise control but a 197 with cup chassis would sort that. From personal experiences i would say its quicker, handles better, looks better. You may have to consider it does cost more to run then a 172, my insurance, petrol bills have both gone up but who's keeping track.

I went from a 182 to 197. The 197 didnt feel as quick and felt alot bigger and hevia! But, much better build quality.

i think the 197 is a better car all round though. I would still swap it for a vee though! ;)

  Nimbus 197
bah, all my mates are Jap crap drivers ;) Scoobies, 200sx, Civics, non are good on a twisty road, they all only do straight lines.....

^Yeah thats not quite right my S13 isn't shabby in the corners and wasn't far behind the 197 in terms of cornering ability..

I've only had a brief drive of my friends 172 but I preferred my 197 over it completely 100%. It misses the 5k kick but its just as quick and it was so well planted in any corner I threw it into. A lot of people say that it isn't as fun because its not as raw, I dont understand that when I threw my mates 172 about it felt twitchy however the 197 was predictable. IMHO the 197 was more fun to drive than the 172 however I think I'm in a minority

I have to agree. A lot of people that say the 197 isn't as fun blah blah blah, are probably basing their judgement on a 20-30 minute test drive.

I have to agree too. I think people like the 172 because it gives you a greater sensation of speed, when it comes down to sheer on-edge driving thrills the 197 is much better, the 197 inspires driver confidence and can be driven harder thanks to better stability and brakes. My only complaint is the lack of torque, but despite this I'm pretty certain that from point A to point B driving the 197 is the quicker car!

  Cammed 182 :)
The 197 is slower just check Evo mag also has less bhp per ton than 182 but its a newer car so...... there is a good video on youtube with a 197 trying to keep pace with a 182 round track guess who won? yup 182.

see if you can get one of the 2nd hand one out for a drive, i think they have a 197 at rannoch drive in bearsden.

This is an ancient argument now, some mags say the 197 is quicker others say the 1*2 is. Get yourself out on the road and see how many car lengths you 'pull' on a 197. If your both in a standard car it'll be down to who hits the loud pedal 1st I 100% guarantee it. In the corners I think if the 197 was in front it would slowly pull ahead on a 1*2 however if the 1*2 was in front it'd stay that way, because whilst they are close in terms of outright capability the 197 driver will feel a lot more confident than the 1*2.

I agree, having owned a 172, 182 and a 197 I think it's fair to say I have enough experience of the three to pass comment. I've also spent a fair amount of time out on the track with profesional tuition. The 197 from my personal experience is the quicker car, not particularly in a straight line but as you mention it inspires more confidence thanks to its better stability and brakes, it's generally more planted on the road.

Your average driver doesn't drive anywhere close to the cars capabilties anyway, so the differences between the cars are minimal on the public road.

went from a 182..

to a megane 225...

different league..comfort etc...

Not only is this ball-achingly obvious it's also not necessarily a positive, all of the meggys I have been, in even one with ECU/intercoller work where a lot quicker in a straight line that the Clio, but lacked the element of raw, involving luncay that my 182 has, especially in the bends. Its like a big comfy bus, and I fear the 197 is quite similar in this aspect so for me it would not be as enjoyable.

I must add however this is probably not a fair comparision due to work that has been done on my car handling wise, standard to standard I would imagine the 197 would be far more enjoyable than the 182 as it certainly has a charper chassis.

Fuel economy seems to be the main topic convo from what i gather its pretty pish compared to a 172/182

I like them, Nimbus is the heros colour choice!

sat in one for the first time on sat, felt 5 star compaired to the cup. Recaros are very comfy too. Dibs on your inlets btw;)

Its not actually that bad. My mates 172 does 32mpg and in exact same driving conditions my 197 did 29mpg. On long trips they evened out at around 36-37mpg. Its worse than the 197 but wouldn't make a big difference on weekly petrol costs.

The 182 driver was better then, a standard 182 vs a standard 197 the 197 would get my bet everytime.

Better brakes
Better cornering
More stability

Either that, or the 197 ran out of fuel half way round!!

 Rubbish there more factors to consider than bhp per ton.

182 0-62 7.1 secs
197 0-62 6.9 secs

Who cares about fuel, it's a sports car so buy it and use it like one.
