Available on some models of cars as a factory option from 2014 or available to retrofit via the pioneer/Apple offering.

This almost makes me want to abandon my oem+/no chavvy aftermarket head unit rule for my car.

I had the cabled version for my current head unit, I sold the adaptor in the end as it was very very glitchy. I'd probably give it a try if they threw dab in on one of the head units as well.

I wonder if there is a way to get to it work with the renault stalk controls.

This would be brilliant if it could be placed where the sat nav/RS monitor sits. It'd stay nice and oem.

I wasn't aware there was an existing model of this. How did the cabled/adaptor version work?

Yeah pretty much, not cheap though for the newer devices, it's around £100 worth of cables alone. The pioneer adaptor, an apple vga-lightning adaptor, a vga cable and a lightning cable (that's what was required for mine anyway) and it never worked as smoothly as the video shows on that Pioneer link, in fact I had it around a month before I sold it all on.

I had it installed in my meg mate, i still have that same head unit mind just not all the connecting cables for the phone.
