Argh.... 172 sounds like a tractor!

Was on my way out last night, went over some train lines in my village and as I accelerated away it felt like I was in a too higher gear for my speed, but checked and I wasn't. Anyhow, engine suddenly became very noisy (sounded like a tractor running rough!). There's a small amount of smoke coming from around the rear of the engine, probably by the looks of the area around the top of the exhaust manifold, and a distinct "eggy" smell like you get from a cat sometimes.

The engine itself seems fine, starts ok, idles ok, oil has no water in it, and vice versa, so im hoping its maybe the exhaust manifold gasket broken up? Its just VERY noisy, and sounds like its poping rather than running smoothly

Anyone got any ideas, and if so, a rough price i could be looking at??

mine did that mate and the cat was shot had a new one fitted thank god it was under warranty from the garage i got it from otherwise would have cost in excess of 500

Yeah I thought it was the cat originally, I thought it had probably broken up as I went over the train line, and blocked itself up, hence the smoke/fumes coming out of the top of the manifold as the cat would have been blocked..... except that there is still quite a lot of fumes coming out of the exhaust, so I dont think that the cat is blocked. The noise sounds like its right towards the top of the engine, rather than towards the bottom of the car where the cat is

ull have to take it to a gargae,,, if theres no loss in power and runnin fine would guess at zorst/cat issue
