aux belt and engine noise problem

Hi,

i own a 2002 clio sport 172

Ive noticed a noise coming from my car when i accelerate, at 2000 revs or above it makes a taping noise that gets faster the faster you go, as soon as i take my foot off the accelerator it stops.

So looked under the bonnet and discovered theres a small slither of the aux belt missing a few little tufty bits around the edge of the belt....

So would the too be linked?

my guess is a pulley might of become damaged and caused the belt to tear

any help or advice id be gratful

cheers

p/s i brought the car 3 weeks ago have done about 750 miles, is it worth me taking it back to them, or are they likely to say piss off it could of happened in the last 750 miles?

firstly & most importantly DON'T drive it.

What's the mileage and has it had its belts done according to the schedule?

the mileage is 46,600, according to the service book no belts have been changed, i guess the belt has passed 5 years so needs changing.

Both belts are well overdue. Get it done ASAP and please don't drive it, if the belt(s) go you can be looking at big £age to get it sorted.

im based in Warwickshire, is it worth me taking it back to the garage i brought it from? or should i just ring the out of house warranty cover they gave me, also, is the noise linked to the worn belt? or do you think i might need a pulley fixing to?

Warranty wise you will need to discuss that with the place you bought it from, I don't know how car sales work based on incomplete service history - probably something you should have looked into before you bought it if I'm honest as the belts on these cars are not the cheapest service to get done!

Tapping could be a huge variety of things, best to get it looked at by a specialist.

Not much point speaking to the warranty company, as its a wear and tear item.

Both belts should have been changed a long time ago.

Chances are Dan will be correct on this but I'd still ring the place you bought it from on the off chance they'll rectify the problem with the damaged belt. If they won't I'd do as what as been previously said in this thread and take it to a specialist.

As said dont drive it. If that belt snaps it can take out the cambelt and its new engine time.
