pics needed I think. By the sounds of it, you just need to replace the aux belt kit (tensioner/idler/belt) provided nothing else has gone mechanically wrong causing it to jump the first place.

Should just be aux kit. Lucky it didn't go properly and take the cambelt with it

funny enough I have a aux belt in the boot as the guy who I bought it from had a spare one, if im going to.replace aux belt should I.do.cambelt at.same.time it was done.in late 2010 last.

Need to replace the aux belt kit including tensioners and not just the actual belt.

The cambelt is meant to last 5 years or 72k. So that would be late 2015 or 72k miles since it was last done.

Up to you, but at garage rate including parts you're looking at a c.£290 bill for the aux kit and c.£600 for the cambelt as you will probably want to change the dephaser pulley too at least.

the temp flying up will be caused by the belt not turning the pump! The belt has "probably" come off due to a f**ked pump

if you look at the photo you posted you can see brown spoof under the waterpump which normally means - dead

right here is my current plan of action the car needs
water pump
aux belt
hand brake cable
lamba sensors
rear licence plate light
steering wheel needs a retrim and I.need a new gear knob insert as mine has worn
these are only small.jobs but.i.have decided to keep the car off the road as the tax is due at the end of the month and just to save and then get everything done.before driving it again as it wil get the jobs done faster and my car how I want it but my aim is late august at the latest ready for trax at silverstone. can anyone reccomend a place.to.get my belt and pump.done within essex taking into mind it will.need to be flatbedded there so thats an added cost

Personally I'd get it repaired as cheaply as poss and get rid, that's a HUGE amount of money to be spending on a car of that age IMHO.

Discounting the wheel retrimm surely it's only a couple of hundred quids worth of work? Hardly a HUGE amount on money!

Note the IMHO.. Then again I only keep cars for a year or so.. Only ever changed one cambelt and that was due to one failing.

Regards to the topic of the thread, spending over 1k on a car that's worth 4.5k at best seems a false economy to me.

well I payed 3200 on it in january and it is pretty good as it is on 88k I think its worth it becuase of id lose so much selling it that I.wouldnt be able to.afford.another plus when it clean and running it looks pretty cool and plus I.dont know anyone of my age with a car that is this quick :)

In that respect I wouldn't spent 800£ on a car worth now less than 3k.. But it's horses for courses i guess.

  Many.
Will be interesting to find out why the belt came off, nothing is seized, and the belt appears in good condition.

So what would you do, sell it at a reduced cost because of the work in mind and then where will that get you, you won't be any better off. I don't understand the mentality of "won't pay X because the cars only worth Y" it's not about what the car is worth it's about what can you afford to do.

You could go plough money into a newer car and still be riddled with faults that end up costing just as much.

I see you're in Chelmsford, I use Two Techs Renault specialist in Dartford, 5 minutes from the Dartford Bridge, always done me well on my Clio & Megane, had a lot of work done by them.

As i said horses for courses, clearly people are reading far too much into what i'm saying and getting the hump about it. I've had 3 MK2 Clios, a brand new 1.2 16v 53 plate which was my frist car 10 years ago, a 55 plate 182 a year a half later, an R27 after the 182, an absolute heap of shite 172 (the de-phaser pulley failed on that), now latterly the 200, TBH i'd NEVER own another MK2 clio unless it was a mint 172 Cup in iceberg, the standard 172s are IMO a bit lacking after the 182 with cup bits and the R27.

It's an age thing as well, generally speaking the older a car gets the more faults and issues they seem to develop, granted not all new/newer cars are flawless either, so i appreciate what you're saying from both sides of the table, spend money on an older to sort the issues, or plough money into a newer car which may also have issues, although newer cars tend to come with warranties to solve these issues without costing the owner any money.

£6000 spent on my clio in 2 years and proud, lol. been in 2 crashes, surrvived both, and an endless list of repairs, including now 8 spring replacements LOL (2 done today). apart from the alloys and front bumper she still looks fine.

if you like the car you drive... why not?

Exactly! It should be about how much a car is worth to it's owner, not the marketplace. And think of all the classics we'd be without today if it wasn't for a few people spending a bit of money here at a time when the car's value was rock bottom!

Anyway, on topic; ParisPeach - it could've been a lot worse. Hope the 182's fixed up soon :)

I made some progress today after a 13 hour shift im trying to sort out some moneys to finace the parts, AlexW is going to help me out and do the bits whilst showing me how to do some stuff becuase I need to learn and cant call myself a petrolhead if I cant even change brake pads etc. so I pm a few traders getting qoutes on parts will update when ordering has taken place.

also has anyone got a retrim by snappy with the wheel to match the airbag? I want to see that becuase that what I most likely want to get.

right so we stripped it down to find out where the problems was in hope that we could find that it had just come off and put the new belt on there. turns out the only thing wrong was the alternator which had been missing a bottom bolt and this has shaken it loose and caused the top bolt that was holding it together to snap from the bracket off so now I have get hold of an alternator and change that and get hold of new bolts.

So your steering broke, but you though it would be to continue driving for another mile? However very lucky!
