Pulling to the left or right is usually tracking, wheel balance or suspension components, as you probably know. Im not 100% certain, but I dont think wear in the steering rack would necessarily cause pulling to either side unless it was damaged. Parts of the column can wear though and will show itself through a lot of slack in the wheel. One forum user has had the rubber parts welded up for 100% precision steering!
