Best oil for a Williams

Can anybody recommend a quality oil and grade for my Williams. Having only done 39K miles, its really just a pup in terms of engine wear. It seems to start of really smooth just after a service, but it soon gets a bit rough.

If your car feels fresh after a service then I reckon its probably due to cleaned/replaced ignition components more than the oil.

Renault recommend 10/40 and 15/40 semi-synthetics for the Williams. Im not one to argue with that and the Renault specialist I use always fills the engine with Renault branded Elf oil. Im sure its not the most technically superior, but I think that most branded modern oils are way superior to what we used to have available anyway.

Nice to hear of a cared-for low miler. Mines got 62k on the clock, but it does keep creeping up! If the car is new to you, watch out as I found that although mine had low miles when I bought it, a lot of the rubber-based parts had worn just as quickly as on my old 16V with 105k on the clock (steering column parts, anti-roll bar mounts etc.).

Thanks Ben. I think youre right about rubber-based parts, the steering hisses a bit when turning right and it definately pulls to the left a bit. I dont know whether that is the pump or a problem with the steering rack?

Having said that its wearing pretty well so far. I bought it nearly two years ago and it had only done 18K, and it was still on the original tyres; just about anyway. Ive had to shell out for an exhaust, cat, tyres, discs and pads so far.

The hiss from the power steering pump is common, although later it might fail and can be quite expensive to replace. Some people have had luck in reducing the noise by adding a lubricant additive to the power steering fluid.

Pulling to the left or right is usually tracking, wheel balance or suspension components, as you probably know. Im not 100% certain, but I dont think wear in the steering rack would necessarily cause pulling to either side unless it was damaged. Parts of the column can wear though and will show itself through a lot of slack in the wheel. One forum user has had the rubber parts welded up for 100% precision steering!

Get some lovely Elf competiton ST 10w40 or 15w50 from Renault....its priced great.

lol more than 1 peson on the forum has had their columns welded at the joint mate..........

try Slick 50 power steering fluid that might get rid of the noise, thats what a few people on here have had luck with.......

Elf Competition ST is good but you may have trouble getting hold of it, its NOT simply available at every Renault dealers, in fact most of them dont sell it

id recommend Silkolene Pro R 15W-50 or Pro S 10W-50

Have a look in the handbook which came with your car. If not all the above are fine.
