Beware the CAT C write-off!

  Renaultsport Clio 172 Cup
You all probably know this and I am therefore preaching to the converted, but no matter what the price or how genuine the seller - ALWAYS HPi a potential purchase before parting with your hard earned.

English law dictates "Buyer BEWARE" which means - the seller can tell you what ever lies they like, mislead you, con you, and the law will do nothing as it is up to you to check all the facts before you purchase.

So my Cup, which it later transpired had been both a CAT D and CAT C write-off was mine and nobody was going to do anything about it. Not the Police, DVLA or VOSA.

The car has now been put back to road worthy condition at great cost to myself, but the buck stopped here. I wasn't about to pass this misery onto anyone else. The car is now my pride and joy and I look forward to seeing what it can do in the NSCC Speed Championship this season. Hope to see some of you at the meetings.

For details of rounds in the championship, log on to: www.gosprinting.co.uk and see the calendar for 2007.

For the cheap price a HPI check is...i would do it with any car, no matter how new/old

Will you keep the cup? do you think you'll have problems selling it if you did decide to part with it?

I'll buy your cup. Cat C/D doesn't put me off, as long as it's been repaired properly & has been fitted with new parts (receipts/bills to prove) then I'm game.

Not sure why everyone is against CAT C/D cars, you can potentially get a real bargain.

At least cat c has to be tested and recertified, as subway says a real bargin if you're careful.

cat c or d would never be twisted chassis though would it, so dont put people off bargains scott, play nicely

argeed. but selling them is more of an issue.

You take the bargin at the time and accept that you will likely sell on at a slightly lower price again, but ultimately with depreciation the gap between regular and accident damaged ones will narrow as the average value gets lower - e.g. on a 10k car the loss through C/D is going to be much greater than a 3k car.

This was a proper con job. BEWARE CAT C.

My car has now been re-shelled due to the extent of the damage sustained in the front end crash it had, which presumably was the CAT C it suffered. RWS in Cotgrave put it on their JIG and applied 8tonnes of pull to the NSF corner which was back a good inch. The shell didn't budge!!!!!

I have now spent approx £10k on a car that at best is worth £7k. Admittedly, it is now virtually brand new:
New shell, front subframe, back axle, bonnet, tailgate, ns door, exhaust, cat, manifold, wheels, wishbones, antiroll bar, seatbelts, relay module etc, etc. I would upload some pics but am struggling at the mo'.

Just to add. This car was sold with an MOT. But when I got home I found the rear seatbelt pre-tensioners had fired and the belts didn't actually work, so how did it get a MOT. The front end was so twisted, the anti roll bar was trying to pull itself out of the wishbone brackets!!!

Could have put lexus lights on it and sold it to a local hoodlum. He would only crash it again anyway

Usually an entusiastic seller who tells you that a car is cat d and wants to bore you to tears with all the fun he/she had restoring the car is genuine...
I bought a cat d monaco blue 172, 52 (03) plate, complete history, reciepts, fixed by a renault dealer (not sure if thats entirely a good thing though :p ) 28k miles, absolutely immaculate! (new bumper, wing, bonnet and light) Got it for £4700!!! Bargain!!! Been taxed, mot'd and serviced since, and had 10k miles done on it and not a problem.

Be aware, but a potential bargain is there to be had!

Both fair points

It says on the front of a V5 log book near the bottom if a car is damaged repaired also the date it was crashed

isn't there something in UK Law about being a 'knowledgeable party' wherebuy if you buy a car from a garage, and it makes a funny noise when you buy it. The seller (knowledgeable party) says it is supposed to make that noise and you buy it on that basis, you have grounds to seek compensation should you find out it is not supposed to make the noise and you have to pay to fix it etc and the guy lied.
something like that anyway!

Only if it's cat C. As has been said, potencially bargins are to be had. If you are going to buy a car, either hpi it or if you're not fussed about damaged ones make sure they've been repaired properly. A lot of the time, if they have been repaired properly they will be better than when they left the factory.

As for selling them. You buy cheap, You sell cheap. I've kept photos and receipts of repairing my 306. All comes in handy if going to sell.
