Re: James/BigAsh 182 Race Car by TDF... It doesn't get much better than this! *Pic He
Donington 17[SUP]th[/SUP] Feb:
On Friday we went down to Donington for the day to try and get some more miles on the car and do a bit more of a rigorous shakedown test. The first shakedown test at Snetterton was to make sure everything was working as it should and to check everything stayed where it needed to. Today was more about turning up the pace a bit more and seeing what the car could do and also to try and see how the few modifications had worked such as the PAS tank.
We ended up doing the day at Donington due to convenience and also the fact that I know the circuit quite well. We went on a Goldtrack day which I thought would be fairly quiet due to the extortionate price which I really begrudged paying and also the fact that it was mid week so thought everyone would be at work, I even asked goldtrack about this and explained that I wanted to attend a fairly quite day to get some good running in and they said on Thursday it wouldn’t be an issue and that it wasn’t a very busy day. Upon arrival it looked as though we had arrived into a mixture between the BTCC paddock and a collection of supercars! This ‘Trackday’ looked set to be more of a testday. My mistake really though as for some reason I hadn’t even thought about race teams! (blonde moment)
TDF were supporting me again to ensure the car ran smoothly and they did a great job as always! Alan arrived nice and early to ensure we got a garage and then got the car ready for the day, I went and signed on and then due to the volume of race teams attending the organizers didn’t even bother with sighting laps and just sent us out straight away. We went out first thing and although the circuit was damp and drizzling it wasn’t too bad and it was giving me an opportunity to feel where the limit of grip was without having to be doing the higher speeds that you would in the dry.
We had altered the geo on the car since Snetterton and taken a little front camber off along with taking a little off the toe-out. These changes seemed to really help and were making the car feel a lot more stable. Once we got the R888’s warmed up we kept coming back into the pits to drop the tyre pressures as they were getting too hot and the car was washing out. Once we got the tyres down to a stable 30psi hot pressure the car felt very good and it was feeling like a nice safe setup.
Tony Hunter had come along to see how we got on for the day and as I mentioned in my earlier posts his experience of running the Burpspeed clio was invaluable. Tony helped out with managing and monitoring the tyre pressures and temperatures as well as giving setup advice. He was also able to give advice on my rather ropey and rusty driving technique that I need to work on
Both Tony and Mark (Northloop Cup) came along and it was great to meet them both and they are both great guys. It was nice to have a good chat about the cars and take in some of their experience.
Apart from coming in occasionally to check over the car and make sure everything was okay the car spent most of the day out on circuit and it was happy just going round and round which I think was seriously impressive and a great demonstration as to how reliable the car is that TDF have built. The enlarged PAS tank that Matt fitted has done the job beautifully we had no more issues with it even though the car spent a lot longer out on track than it did at Snetterton. The false floor has also worked really well and puts my feet in a great position for the pedals.
The actual trackday itself was a little frustrating as there were a lot of serious race cars such as Ferrari 458’s, Carrera cup’s, BTCC car and lots more so down the straights some of them were monstrous so it was nice to get chance to go down a straight without having to let them past. There were also a few times were they didn’t want to wait until the next straight and on a couple of occasions they came dangerously close to a few cars mine being one of them but luckily I kept my eyes on the mirrors and could see what they were doing.
This time out luckily I didn’t go exploring the scenery like I did at Snetterton so I am gradually improving
The development of myself is now the biggest stumbling block between me and getting the car into competition. I am going to really try and work on this over the next couple of months and get upto speed. I will be getting out in the car as often as possible building up experience and trying to develop my driving skill to do some justice to the incredible car that TDF have built for me!
I did plan to take the car back home after Donington but we took it back to the workshop as there are a few little jobs that need to be done such as a worn CV joint that I thought would have been okay from the stock car but has now decided to give up. We also need to play around with a few other bit’s and pieces but I will do another update after my next visit to the workshop later this week.
After a successful day we decided it was only right to go and have a nice bite to eat and a beer which the guys definitely deserved and it was a shame Tony wasn’t there as I owe him a few drinks also! It was a nice way to end a very enjoyable day.
I have attached some photo’s from the day that one of my friends took but there are a lot more here
