Bought a 172 today- its now on a RAC flatbed

Hi

Had the day from hell today. Picked up a 2003 172 today- driving home and the car looses all power, engine management light on and a really bad burning smell - the car just judders really bad. Also its backfiring etc

RAC out and thinks its a valve gone which i understand isnt cheap, he said its going to need further investigating

He plugged it into the machine and its bringing up a oxygen sensor fault, which is most likely being triggered by the valve

I dont have a clue about mechanics, can anyone give me any advice on how to get this fixed whilst i enjoy the 150 mile trip in an rac flatbed?

Any advice apprechiated

cant really give you any advice untill you give us a better indication as to whats up..
what were you doing the previous 10 seconds to this happening ? ie engine braking, eratic driving etc or steady.

Sorry to hear that mate, majorly unlucky! If i was you and the RAC guy said it could be a valve, find a garage and ask them to remove the rocker cover and inspect the valves. If they find that the valve/valves are fucked then your looking at an engine rebuild which is not cheap! Personally in your position I would consider buying a used engine and asking a garage to get it fitted if it turns out you need an engine rebuild. Hopefully it won't need that good luck!

Hmm did he check if the cat had collapsed inside

this would cause loss of power and the burning smell??

Thanks for the replies, i was driving steady along a 30 - it was fine on the test drive etc

I literally have no idea about mechanics, speaking to a mate it mite just be easier to get a new engine fitted

well wait till you get back before rushing into anything. have a good look over the engine for any signs of anything. then id get a mechanic in to give you a proffesional opinion

take it to a specialist not any do body garage, removal of the rocker cover is a big job especialy to a garage that does not know f4r engines.

What an awful start to ownership ! :( Very unlucky...

Take it to Carlton Garage in Exmouth if you can get it there. I'm sure they'll be able to pick it up, or the RAC take you there depending on cover.

Hope it's resolved easily/painlessly !

A and J used cars can suck on my ginger nuts.

Tell them you are excersizing your right to return the goods as they are faulty.

Monday morning, 9am, go on google and look up ''Consumer Direct''. Ring them and they will talk you through what needs to be done.

They are fcuking cnuts. I hate car traders with a passion. Slimy good for nothing conning robbing cnuts.

If you need any help pm me.

I was just about to ask you about this, isn't there a "cooling off" period with this sort of thing?

If the car has to be returned for repairs then the customer is perfectly entitled to ask for a refund.

If it was a faulty coilpack then execting a refund is a bit cuntish, but for something as serous as a droppd valve, then i'd be wanting every penny back.

Thanks Dan, should i get the car booked into to a garage to be looked at first? I also signed the receipt which sais no warranty and the section which declares i mechanically checked the car

Its annoying that i couldnt stay up in London and sort it but im on my way back 2 yeovil in the recovery truck as we speak

Do not let any other garage near it, don't even bother faffing about with it yourself, take it straight back to them. They'll only use you touching it as an excuse to try and get out of it.

yep! you will be entitled to your money back mate..

dreadfully unlucky all the same and a major PITA having to fight for a refund, but am fairly sure there is a law that if your car buggers up within a certain period you are entitled to refund or for them to sort it out?!?
someone on here will know more...

Because they are a business, they CANNOT sell a car without a warranty. SOLD AS SEEN, TRADE SALE etc no longer exists. If you are a business that sells cars, every single car you sell must be fit for purpose. Not even getting the car home is deemed as not fit for purpose...

Just trust me mate, ring Consumer direct. I use them when I get nob head customers and they are 10% and straight down the line helping both traders and consumers.

Daniel is 100% right, when the call the garage make sure you use the phrase "Fit for purpose"

When you buy as a consumer from a motor trader, your legal rights under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 cannot be taken away or reduced. An example of an attempt to do so is a notice such as ‘sold as seen’. Such phrases are meaningless and cannot alter your rights. If you see a sign of this type, report it to Consumer Direct on 08454 040506. A warranty or guarantee can only be given in addition to your legal rights, not instead of them.

yep use the not fit for purpose.. i bought a car from a evans halshaw dealership in the north east and 2 weeks later i ended up with collapsed rear bearing after they did some work and the dealership said to me it was sold 2 me not fit fort purpose... so anyways next thing i know i ended up with getting new cv boot, rear discs, pads, and stub axel due to them leaving the shims off when they changed the disc

dealership down hear was spot on and fixed it and then just billed the dealers in the north east.. deffo seek advice from consumer advice tho

I hate second hand car trader's with a passion. I'd rather take my chance at finding a good private sale, cheaper and you can usually tell a good car/owner a mile off.

As said before don't touch the car, get in touch with trading standards, get your money back and then come see me and buy mine.... ;)

Keep us informed on how you get on........

Good luck with it mate, hope it gets sorted.

I've had enough of dealers today, everyone I went to look at for MrsDuck was priced higher than it was on autotrader!

This is so s**t I really hope you get it sorted / money back. This is why I hate buying used cars, I just hate the feeling something is going to go wrong and then when it does the dealers are dickheads about it (not always).

Also Daniel where are you located as I have a mate looking for a car at the mo?

My dad bought a classic 911 from a dealer half a year ago, a few days after the purchase it wouldn't start.
The garage and my dad had a huge dispute over it and he called a help line place, guessing its consumer direct?

One more call to the garage and they had agreed to fix it.
The bill was huge in the end, thank god he got advice tbh.

Go get your money back mate.
