Brake discs are fucked

  RenaultSport clio 182 CUP
Have noticed recently that the performance of my front brakes has been on the decline over last couple of weeks so today thought id take a look.
To my horror it appears that the inside of the disc s have completley corroded. There is huge rusty patches all the way round. The outside is fine and the pads have loads of meat on them!
Its only done 18000 miles and i cant understand it.

Could it be a faulty discs or pads?? Its the same problem on the other side.

Phoned my local dealer and they said they would have a look but it would nt br covered under warranty but surely it has to be they cant be that badly manufactured surely!!

Any opinions or advice or anyone who has ad similar probs would love to here from you cause dont really want to shell out for new discs especially if its just gonna happen again!!

Maybe i should phone renault UK and argue my side??!

Re: Brake discs are f**ked

Is this on the front or back?

My rear discs are a bit rusty on the inside but the fronts that do all the work shouldn't be...the swept area covered by the pads should be completely clean/shiny.

Sounds like it could be a caliper/piston problem

yeah its on the front just thought it was unusual that its happened on both sides?!!!

Re: Brake discs are f**ked

That definately isn't right...the pads obviously aren't contacting the discs properly as they should be clean on both sides.

Like I said, sounds like it could be a caliper problem but I would get it checked out as a fluid change may help if it hasn't been done for around 4yrs.

Is the pedal spongy at all?

  RenaultSport clio 182 CUP
the cars on 54 plate so fluid never been touched to my knowledge. I know renault build quality aint great but this is piss poor for basically a new car!!
Pedal isnt spongy at all. The piston does look a little corroded and i gave it a good brush with a wire brush but shouldnt happen anyway

Re: Brake discs are f**ked

Doesn't sound like the fluid then....the car is too new.

I totally agree with you..things like this shouldn't happen to a car which is only a couple of years old. I don't think it's necessarily a Renault thing as some are okay....it's just that when they do get things wrong they do it good and proper.

I'm still with the caliper problem as the pistons and sliders can get very dirty and become seized....especially if rubber seals have gone.

Still odd to see this on both sides of the car though.

Re: Brake discs are f**ked

discs arent expensive, £26.50 each for the front discs on a 172 from www.gsfcarparts.co.uk, id persoanlly just change them i seriously doubt they will end up like your current discs.

  A4 Avant & A3
get it back to renault.. i had very badly corroded rear discs on my 172 cup (53 plate, 12k miles at the time) i was told by renault that discs aren't covered under the warranty, but as it is quite low mileage renault uk, customer services agreed with the dealer to replace.... them no problem :)

gotta be worth a try, surely you shouldn't be needing new discs on 18k miles!!

Re: Brake discs are f**ked

got the car to the renault stealers today and surprise surprise they agree that there is a fault with the discs!!
Service manager phoned renault for me and they have agreed to replace the discs and pads under warranty so woohooo!!
He also told me that about a month ago renault decided to include brake problems under warranty work. Also he hinted it was because of the amount of complaints regarding poor quality dics so they had no choice really.
So all you guys out there who have dodgy discs and thought there was no point in trying to claim it on the warranty get down your dealer soon as.

grant:)

  182 Cup, (2nd one)
my rear brakes had corroded and the pads had started to crumble at 11k. They replaced the pads, discs and had new calipers all done under warranty

Re: Brake discs are f**ked

Glad to see you got the problem sorted out under the warranty and that Renault have acknowledged that there is a problem with some of the brakes , quite a few people have reported on here that their brakes weren't performing as they should . Could be a big help to some of those people .
