Brake problem - please help!

  Renault Clio 1.8 RSi

I was driving along quite happily the other night when I put my foot on the brake pedal, and it went down almost to the floor before the brakes began to work. Needless to say I almost s**t myself.

So i called the AA, the guy turns up and problem didnt happen for him. He informed me that most probably the seals on the master cylinder were beginning to perish and it should be replaced soon.

So in the morning I head off to Renault, and guess how much they quote me to replace the master cylinder?.................£635! my jaw hit the floor

A couple of questions:
1. Cant I just have the seals replaced, not the whole master cylinder?
2. Roughly how much should this cost?

Ive had something similar to this happen a couple of times and almost pooped my pants when it did! The pedal dropped really low for a split second but when I released then pressed it again it was fine........be interesting to know what the Clio clan come back with.

sudden loss of the brake pedal followed by the pedal returning to normal would normally point to an internal fault with the master cylinder.
