Brakes: Rattling and Squeeking

Hi there, looking for some advice on what to look at first.

Driving to work this morning I heard a sqeeling noise that was hard to pin point. After a while of driving I applied the breaks and this stopped. It also seemed to dampen when the wheels were turned but don't think its a bearing.

The breaks did seem to be rattly at slow speeds when I was later parking at work.

Front pads were still good at last check a few days ago.

Cheers, care to expand. Whats a shim and what needs done

just takes up the space between the pad and the carrier, its a small stainless stell thing (2 per caliper)

just needs popping back in, i maybe wrong, hard to say without seeing the car
